“Holy sh-t! It was crazy”: Ryan Reynolds Claimed Infamous $220M DC Flop Was Avoidable, Kept Filming It For an Honorable Reason
Ryan Reynolds is a popular personality in the entertainment sector who enjoys a special place in Hollywood’s elite circles. Everyone will always remember his spectacular Deadpool performance, complete with smart comedy and the characteristic red attire.
As seen by his hit movies like Deadpool, The Voices, and Adventureland, Reynolds is regarded as a top talent in Hollywood. He has a devoted following due to his great acting abilities which makes his noteworthy achievements stand out. Even a great actor like Ryan Reynolds has appeared in his fair share of a $220 million disaster film.
Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern was a commercial disaster
There are films that go on to become masterpieces, others that are only passable, and then there are those that are commercially disastrous. Despite having fantastic characters, DC occasionally fails to fully bring them to life through engaging storytelling or in-depth investigation. Martin Campbell’s film Green Lantern is a good example. The film failed with its plot, spectacular effects, and character portrayals despite having a lot of money to work with.
Unfortunately, Ryan Reynolds‘ Green Lantern belongs to the genre of bad movies. Many people wished the movie had never been made. Reynolds even makes fun of it in a humorous scene that follows Deadpool 2‘s credits.
Green Lantern tells the story of Hal Jordan, a heroic test pilot who becomes the first human Green Lantern after receiving a special Ring. His goal is to overthrow the mighty Parallax. The film was intended to launch DC’s expansive movie world and lay the groundwork for upcoming films. It didn’t quite find its own direction, though, and strayed from the original comic book story.
According to Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern‘s failure could have been prevented
Ryan Reynolds made an unusual confession. He said that he had never actually seen the entirety of his own film, Green Lantern. He was able to see enough of it to recognize that the movie was, to put it mildly, a disaster. Reynolds didn’t hold back on his emotions in his 2016 movie Deadpool, letting his character shoot a fictitious version of himself in the head for accepting the unfortunate role. He recently revealed his appalled feeling when he saw the film’s premiere.
Reynolds didn’t hold back while recalling that time at the premiere, saying, “The words were ‘Holy Sh*t’ and ‘No. NO!'” Oh my God, down there, my butt was like a ukelele. It was crazy.” Attending the Green Lantern movie premiere was obviously not one of his professional high points.
Reynolds spoke candidly about the disastrous failure of the superhero movie at a comedy festival in the U.K. He highlighted a key problem that, in his opinion, led to the movie’s debacle. He claimed that when issues arose, character development was neglected in favor of an overwhelming focus on wasteful expense. According to Reynolds, “It’s just ‘Let’s just keep spending our way through this.'” And that was that it failed. Reynolds said that the 185 people who worked on the movie enjoyed the production process despite its flaws. A completely different experience was having to watch the film’s premiere.
