The Scene in House of the Dragon Season 2 That Points to a Future Tragedy
Tragedy and destruction are imminent in a war. Every time a war happens, whether real or fictional, lives are lost. Often, innocent and uninvolved people suffer the wrath of the war besides the ones actually partaking in it.
The Dance of the Dragons, known for the fall of the House of Targaryen, is going to see numerous deaths. Two of those already happened in the show’s fifth episode when Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) and her dragon Meleys, members of the Black team, fall to their deaths in a brutal showdown between the two teams at Rook’s Rest.
As if this was not hard enough for the Blacks to stomach, the Greens also paraded the severed head of Meleys through King’s Landing. This was a way for the Greens to assert their power and domination over the Blacks.
The Greens even falsely claimed that King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), who died during the same battle, was the one who killed Meleys. In reality, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar are responsible for the deaths of Rhaenys and Meleys. That said, it is not just the Blacks who are affected by the dragging of Meleys’ head through King Landing.
A Fate Even More Tragic Than the Death of Son Lucerys Velaryon Awaits Rhaenyra Targaryen
Blacks are no strangers to death and mourning. Lucerys Velaryon, the second son of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Laenor Velaryon, died in the finale of the first season. So, Princess Rhaenys and Meleys are not the first Blacks to lose their lives in this bloodlust.
The small people of King’s Landing witnessed the dragging of Meleys’ severed head, and they were not impressed. Their reaction to the incident also seems to hint at the storming of the Dragonpit.
This tragedy sees the small people storm into the Dragonpit and kill all the creatures there. This includes the dragons Shrykos, Morghul, Tyraxes, and Dreamfyre. In an attempt to flee from there, Rhaenerys’ son Joffrey Velaryon ignores his mother’s protests and mounts her dragon Syrax despite the lack of a strong bond with the fire-breathing animal.
In its distress and confusion, Syrax throws off Joffrey, who falls into the city and meets his untimely ending. Syrax ascends into the chaos of the city, but gets overpowered by the crowd and dies at their hands. So, not only Rhaenyra loses her son in their tragic affair, but also her dragon. Ultimately, she also has to leave the place after this tragedy.
