House of the Dragon Season 2 May Have Filled a Giant Hole George R.R. Martin Left in ‘Fire & Blood’ With its Wild Seasmoke Twist
- House of the Dragon is a spin-off and prequel of the hit show Game of Thrones.
- The dragon Seasmoke has chosen a new rider after Laenor Velaryon left after faking his death.
- Addam of Hull could have been chosen for quite a few reasons by Seasmoke.
Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the House of the Dragon follows the civil war of the House Targaryen family. The show’s Season 2 is currently the talk of the town, all thanks to the ruling family of Westeros fighting amongst themselves for control over the Iron Throne.
As the name suggests, the show involves dragons, even though there will be hardly any left by the time the Dance of the Dragons has ended. The fire-breathing majestic creatures have a special bond with their riders and stay loyal to them for as long as they live.
This brings one to question whether they allow other people to ride them while their bonded riders are alive. The question remains unanswered in George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, but the show might have put an answer to it without being exclusive regarding the whole thing.
House of the Dragon Gives a New Rider to Seasmoke
House of the Dragon shows plenty of dragons – both claimed and unclaimed. Rhaenyra Targaryen has been actively seeking riders for the unclaimed dragons and one of them is Seasmoke. This dragon actually originally belonged to Laenor Velaryon.
Laenor faked his death in the first season of House of the Dragon and has not shown any signs of returning so far. When Rhaenyra tries to get Seasmoke to bond with Ser Steffon Darklyn, the dragon shows its disapproval by setting Steffon on fire and ultimately, killing him.
Would that mean that Seasmoke will remain riderless? Certainly not, because it has already chosen the Addam of Hull as its new rider. It did not happen out of the blue because it had been following Addam for a while. For instance, it was seen flying over and watching Addam in Episode 2 of Season 2.
That said, it has to be noted that this incident shows that dragons can bond with other riders while their original riders are still alive because there is no confirmation that Laenor is dead. On the other hand, the book doesn’t offer a clear explanation of whether the dragons can bond with other riders while their original riders are alive.
Why Did Seasmoke Chose Addam of Hull?
While there is no clarity as to why it chose Addam of all people, the possible reason could be the rider’s innocence, and maybe the dragon sees Laenor in the new rider. Another thing that factors in is Addam’s lineage.
Addam and Alyn are Corlys Velaryon’s bastard children. Only Targaryens can ride dragons, so maybe they have traces of Targaryen’s blood because Targaryen and Velaryons might have married sometime along the timeline. If this is not the case, it would mean that anyone can ride a dragon.
House of the Dragon is available for streaming on Max.
