House of the Dragon’s Unscripted, Controversial Scene is Not Entirely Inaccurate to George R.R. Martin’s Lore Due to Rhaenyra’s 1 Past Relationship
- House of the Dragon Season 2 has a rather controversial scene between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lady Mysaria.
- The intimate scenes between them are not completely unreasonable as Rhaenyra has been implicated to have romantic feelings for other women too.
- Lady Mysaria actress believes the kiss between her character and Rhaenyra felt right in that emotional scene.
The second season of House of the Dragon is all set to complete its run with the eighth episode scheduled to be released soon. So far, this new season has featured quite a few scenes that have left viewers rather shocked regardless of whether or not they have read the book.
One of these scenes is the intimate one between Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Mistress of Whisperers Lady Mysaria. This has drawn mixed reactions from fans for various reasons. That said, as unscripted and unrelated it is to the source material, it is not entirely unconventional since Rhaenyra has been in one such relationship according to George R.R. Martin’s story.
House of the Dragon‘s One Controversial Scene is Not Completely Unjustified
It is no secret that some of the relationships in the Game of Thrones prequel/spin-off are rather unconventional as it sees some family members in intimate relationships. The viewers seem to have made peace with these kinds of relationships.
Despite this, the kiss between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) in the sixth episode came as a shock. Moreso because it happened right after the latter had opened up about her abuse and torture at the hands of her father. The two got into an embrace which was meant to console Mysaria.
However, the embrace turned into a passionate kiss, which left fans struggling to wrap their heads around it. It has to be noted that this marks the first intimate scene between two people of the same s*x in the series so it is a significant step towards queer representation.
Although this relationship is not mentioned in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra had a deep bond with Laena Velaryon during their time at Driftback. Rhaenyra’s sadness upon Laena’s death has often led to fans speculate that their relationship was not entirely platonic.
A young Rhaenyra is also portrayed as having somewhat romantic feelings for Alicent Hightower. However, all of this has been left open to interpretation rather than clear indications of Rhaenyra having romantic relationships with any of these women.
Additionally, in the first season of the show, the younger versions of Rhaenyra and Alicent were portrayed by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey. At the time, in an interview with Insider, they had mentioned that they were that there was romantic love between their characters.
The Intimate Scene Between Rhaenyra and Mysaria Was Not Scripted
The kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria was the result of an improvise by D’Arcy as revealed by Mizuno in an interview with TheWrap. She said:
It wasn’t scripted as a kiss. I think it was scripted as … there’s just breath between them or something, and then, whatever happens, is interrupted.
She then explained how it came to be what it is now.
Because we were separate in the room … [and] Mysaria has told this story, [D’Arcy] felt the instinct to hold her, to comfort her. From that, it felt so organic to go into the kiss.
Initially, the actresses were also concerned that the kiss would come across a queerbaiting. However, they mutually concluded that it was an emotionally vulnerable act that it felt right in the moment.
