Spoiler Alert!!

The Penguin, which recently finished its eight-episode run, showed Colin Farrell at his best as he portrayed the character of Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobblepot in ways no one has done before. His portrayal of the crime boss as a ruthless, ambitious, and yet human character has earned him both critical acclaim and viewers’ appreciation.

With the show set within the same universe as The Batman, The Penguin has successfully expanded the gritty, noir-influenced version of Gotham City, created by Matt Reeves. Although Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight has been missing from the series, the show has seeded possibilities for the future in this universe.

The future of Colin Farrell‘s Oz Cobblepot has been speculated by fans, especially after the finale of The Penguin. The ending of the show shows how Oz becomes the new boss of the underworld of Gotham and defeats Sofia Gigante in his struggle for power.

But his victory comes at a personal cost because of his mother’s condition and his shocking murder of his faithful lieutenant, Vic. Talking about his future in The Batman universe, Farrell recently told The Hollywood Reporter,

I signed up for three Batman films, but I didn’t know if I’d be in the second film. Matt Reeves is a brilliant writer and an extraordinary filmmaker, and what I’m most excited-slash-nervous about in the second film is not what Oz does — or what predicaments he finds himself in, or what moments of success he gets to experience — but what his voice is. How is his personality?

Farrell further revealed the number of scenes he might have in The Batman Part II. He said, “I was told I have five or six scenes.” The actor is concerned about how the “degree of almost delusion psychopathy present in the last scene” of his character will be taken up in the upcoming sequel.

However, Oz’s character development suggests that he might be seen in his more unhinged version than what was seen in The Batman. Moreover, fewer scenes also indicate that his role might really be impactful in setting up the plot.

Although Oz has been confirmed to return in The Batman Part II the fate of The Penguin Season 2 remains unknown. The finale of the show leaves many plotlines unfinished, like Sofia Gigante’s imprisonment in Arkham Asylum and her connection to Catwoman through a mysterious letter.

Discussing the possibility of a continuation of the series with The Direct, showrunner Lauren LeFranc said,

I mean, we put it all out on the table. I think that in order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves. We have to feel like there’s something more there to really dig into.

This infers that the door has not been completely shut for the second season. However, the continuation must be compelling enough and should justify itself, which is what Colin Farrell has expressed for his character in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Matt Reeves, who is responsible for this whole universe, is aiming to expand it through TV. In an Interview magazine conversation, he revealed,

We have been talking about doing other shows. I wanted to make sure that we didn’t do the origin tale, which so many of the other series have done… The idea is to do these other stories in the same way.

However, as of now, the ending of The Penguin with the Bat-Signal in Gotham’s sky assures that the new criminal boss will once again cross paths with the Dark Knight soon.

The Penguin is now streaming on Max.

The Batman Part II will be released in theaters on October 2, 2026.
