Willow Smith has already made a name for herself in the industry. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter has released six albums, becoming a name to be reckoned with already. But the 21-year-old has been facing some issues. Recently, the Meet Me At our Spot singer opened up about the issues she had been facing with her image and why she chooses to have her head shaved rather than sport another hair-do. Her interesting perspective was there for everyone to hear.
Willow Smith explains why she prefers a clear head
Just recently, Willow Smith opened up about the reasons behind her shaving her head. In an interview with Glamour UK, Willow Smith revealed the struggles she has been facing with her hairstyle, why she prefers being bald, and why she has been sporting the look for years now. The Purge singer said, “I like to see a glare on my scalp, a bounce of light.”
She was blunt about the reasons which led her to choose to shave her head. She said, “Shaving my head is maybe the most radical thing I’ve done in the name of beauty.” Willow Smith also said how being a black woman had its side effects.
She changed styles to show support to her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith
Willow said that “as a Black woman, there were a lot of layers” to her relationship with her hair and skin growing up. Nonetheless, she liked to try out different hairstyles. Experimenting with various styles comes naturally to her.
She said, “However I’m feeling, I like to do that. I don’t really like to think about it too much. I love to be free with it. I think just being me sometimes is radical.”
And she was inspired to do that by her mom. Jada Pinkett Smith has been very vocal about it and she even cleared her head. She has been engaged in a battle with alopecia for quite some time, and had to shave her head following treatment.
Willow Smith has never shied away from shaving her head
But Willow Smith has been rather radical about changing her hairstyle. She famously shaved her head onstage in July 2020 while promoting her fourth album on Facebook Live. She even said, “I’m always shaving my head at monumental times in my life, when things are really changing. And this is definitely one of those moments.”
She did something similar in March 2020. During a performance art piece called “The Anxiety”, she shaved her head, again. She even invited people to observe her and spent 24 hours in a glass room at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She has a knack for keeping her head free, quite literally.
