Hugh Jackman talks about Deadpool & Wolverine being therapeutic for him

Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated Marvel movie Deadpool & Wolverine, actor Hugh Jackman, along with Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy, appeared for an interview with Fox 5 Washington. The host asked the actors about how they still find playing the characters they have been playing on-screen cathartic and therapeutic.

Jackman, who has played the character of Wolverine since 2000’s X-Men, said,

This saved me a fortune in therapy. I mean, there’s all over the city; there’s anger rooms people go and smash the shit out of. If you pay for an hour, you put on a helmet, and I’m like, I am sorry, I’m getting paid a lot of money to do this for three months at a time and weigh one of your best friends.

Apart from joking, Jackman added that he has always felt that there are roles that come into one’s life for a reason, to occupy them for a reason and teach them something that helps them in bringing out something about them on the surface. The actor noted that he was barely in trouble at school, but he has been playing Wolverine for so long, noting that there is a part of him in there.

Shawn Levy added that he believes everyone has some sort of darkness in them and everyone has that inexpressible or you cannot express your rage feeling that was taught while growing up. Levy added that the anger is to be contained, and so according to him, Hugh Jackman found this vehicle for all that darkness, and everyone loves it because it’s a freedom for all the darker sides.

Upon asking Reynolds, he said that he has never felt freer than when he is playing Deadpool. He added that he thinks that it’s the mast and under the mask is another mask, and he feels free, and he loves clown work. Ryan Reynolds noted that clown work is an underrated profession, which is very hard to pull off, but he loves it.

Levy added that he wants everyone to imagine any other movie star, a job that is defined by the face, and take that way and have them carry a movie and hold the screen. He concluded that is what Reynolds does as Deadpool.
