One of the most popular characters that he has played is the character Maximus Decimus Meridius in the period film Gladiator. The film, directed by Ridley Scott, is still considered one of the best movies to date.
Considering all the attention that Crowe attracted due to his performance, one would think that the fame would get to his head. However, the actual situation was quite the opposite as he once admitted that he felt a little embarrassed by the attention he received.
Russell Crowe Believes That He Was Not the Only One Who Deserved Attention for Gladiator
It is not every day that movies like Gladiator are released, and that is exactly why such masterpieces stand the test of time. The amount of hard work and dedication that goes into such movies may not be very obvious to the audience, but the people behind them sure do remember all they and their co-workers did and also often openly speak about it.
Russell Crowe gained unparalleled fame for his role in this movie and even received the Academy Award for Best Actor. It is quite hard to not bring up this particular project when it comes to discussing his career. The way he speaks about the movie even today is quite telling of his adoration for it.
While discussing his over three-decades-long career an interview with Vanity Fair, Crowe expressed his embarrassment about all the attention he received for the movie.
Last time I saw Gladiator, I actually watched it in the Coliseum in Rome and I actually got a little bit embarrassed that I’d received so much attention for that film. It’s an incredible ensemble cast with beautiful performances from end to end.
He said that it was not just Joaquin Phoenix who gave an incredible performance, but also Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, Tomas Arana, and Djimon Hounsou. This admission that every one of these actors deserved the kind of attention he got proves that the L. A. Confidential star truly has a big heart.
Russell Crowe Has Expressed His Discomfort about the Gladiator Sequel
During his Vanity Fair interview, Crowe said that he believes that every actor deserves to do a movie like Gladiator. Ironically, a sequel to this iconic film is set to be released later this year. Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington will be seen in lead roles.
However, The Pope’s Exorcist actor seems to have bittersweet feelings about the upcoming movie. In an interview on Kyle Meredith With…, he said:
I’m slightly uncomfortable, the fact that they’re making another one, you know? Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done.
He also stated that he knows certain things they are doing that he does not approve of but since he has got no say in it, there is no option other than waiting to see how all of it plays out.
Gladiator is available for streaming on Prime Video and Gladiator 2 is set to hit the theatres on November 22, 2024.
