“I cannot support that level of violence”: Jim Carrey Regrets Making 1 Movie That Affected His Conscience – Now That’s Getting Another Sequel
Jim Carrey is a household name when it comes to Hollywood. He is probably the only man who can pull off Ace Ventura and The Truman Show in the same career. This actor-comedian, mainly known for his energetic slapstick performances, can also seamlessly blend into a movie like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and make the audience cry fat tears. However, even after being the most celebrated artist in Hollywood, he has regrets about taking up one role he wishes he had not.
Jim Carrey Opens Up About The One Film He Regrets In His Career
The movie is none other than the sequel to Kick-Ass, which is a Mark Miller tale about amateur superheroes. Based on the eponymous comic book, the franchise follows teenager Dave Lizewski on his way to becoming a real-life superhero. Jim Carrey played a textbook over-the-top bat-wielding vigilante and put on a spectacular performance.
Even during the filming of Kick-Ass 2, Jim Carrey was excited to work on the project and said (via. The Hollywood Reporter) that he was enjoying playing small parts a lot and burying himself in the character.
“I’m having a lot of fun throwing myself into these smaller parts and burying myself in the character.”
However, the scenario changed with the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, which saw a gunman kill 26 people. It was a massacre that shook America at the time. Jim Carrey took this incident to heart and decided to take a stand against movies featuring excessive violence. He took to Twitter to apologize for starring in Kick-Ass 2 and express his opinion, saying,
“I did Kick-Ass a month before Sandy Hook and now, in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. I meant to say my apologies to others involve [sic] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”
It saw strong criticism from the author of the comic book as well as the executive producer of the movie Mark Miller who wrote in a blog at that time (via. UNILAD)
“[I’m] baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay 18 months ago. Yes, the body count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us Hit Girl was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much…”

He continued.
“Like Jim, I’m horrified by real-life violence (even though I’m Scottish), but Kick-Ass 2 isn’t a documentary. No actors were harmed in the making of this production! This is fiction and like Tarantino and Peckinpah, Scorsese and Eastwood, John Boorman, Oliver Stone and Chan-wook Park, Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless bodycount of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence… Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can’t be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action movie.”
Although Carrey’s character does not really use a gun in the movie and only wields it around like a prop, it was still admirable to see an actor of Carrey’s stature stand for something so important despite knowing the whole industry might admonish him for it.
