“I can’t trust him”: Antony Starr is Homelander in Real Life and Fans Can’t Stop Noticing The Proofs For It
- Antony Starr does not get happy when compared to the antagonist Homelander in real life.
- Fans notice similarities between Antony Starr and Homelander in a resurfaced interview.
- The actor admits he'll be really sad when he has to hang up his spandex.
Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys remains a standout in the superhero genre, being a fresh satirical take on the superheroes rather than just glorifying their existence. Starring Antony Starr as the lead antagonist, Homelander, opposite Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher, the show has managed to make its way to the top of the list. Created by Eric Kripke, the show centers on an eponymous team of vigilantes fighting the Supes as they abuse their powers for personal gain.
The show has received positive responses for its characters, storyline, action, and more since season one. The actors on the show have been highly lauded for their exceptional performances, especially Antony Starr, who plays the main antagonist, Homelander. Fans have pointed out that the actor has a lot of similarities with his character, and it’s scary.
Antony Starr does not like the idea of being compared to Homelander
Actor Antony Starr, who has now become a household name thanks to his exceptional performance as Homelander on Prime Video’s satirical superhero show The Boys, has been lauded for his work as the main antagonist of the show. Still, at the same time, he expressed that he is not impressed with the idea of people comparing him or finding similarities between his character and him. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the actor explained,
People are surprised, like, ‘Oh, my God, you’re actually not like him. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, he’s a psychopathic narcissist. So yeah, thanks. Thanks for that. I actually don’t have superpowers. I have a very sensitive rump.
But a resurfaced interview clip of the actor alongside Deep, played by Chace Crawford from Comic Con, has forced fans to draw comparisons between Starr and Homelander. In the clip that has resurfaced online, the interviewer asks Starr and Crawford, ‘What are you guys most excited about?’ Crawford replied, ‘To work with this guy right here, man’.
What caught the fans’ eye was the expression on Antony Starr’s face that reminded them of the expressions that they’d see on Homelander’s face. Fans commented that Starr was just meant to play Homelander, and no one could have done this role better than he has, with another one noting,
‘I can’t trust him’
A user commented, ‘Homelander is pretending to be Antony Starr’. A lot of fans have mentioned that, on various occasions, they do not have a clear idea if the actor is acting or if he just has a few traits similar to his character. Just like Homelander’s character comes off as scary on-screen for a lot of people, fans mentioned that in this specific interview, Antony Starr gives off the same vibe, which is scary.
But of course, fans should keep in mind that this interview is from an earlier season and not believe that the actor is the character he’s playing on-screen. It is very natural to start sharing a couple of traits from the character one has been playing on-screen for a while especially if that character is as powerful as Homelander, but it is not the reality of the actor.
Antony Starr on ending The Boys with Season 5
It has been known that The Boys’ storylines will come to a full circle in the final and fifth season. As much as the audience would like the show to continue, Eric Kripke feels that season five is a good enough season to bid adieu, and Starr agrees. According to CBR, Antony Starr said,
I’m very conscious that I want us to go out on a positive, strong note. I don’t want us to be the show that pushed one season too far and fell flat. On behalf of everyone who works on the show, I think we deserve to go out with our heads up, not feeling like we should have gone earlier or that we overstayed our welcome.
At the same time, the actor noted that it’s going to be very hard to hang up the spandex, admitting that if he stops to think about that moment, which is short, it’s going to make him sad. He recalled that they started before COVID and released Season 2 in COVID while maintaining protocols and promoting the show from their respective homes.
Starr added that they filmed in COVID, and it’s been such a ride with everyone, so it’s going to be very sad when they’ll have to hang up their superhero suits. He also shared, that it seems like an apt time for them to bring the entire story to a full circle and close the curtain on the show.
The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
