Considering both women are magnetic stage personas, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they share the same attitude while sharing similar genes. Carey expressed,

“Actually, I have had diva moments, and then people can’t handle it. I guess it’s a little intense, because I come from a true diva: My mother is an opera singer. And that’s a real diva, you know – Juilliard diva. And so other people that are like, ‘I’m a diva,’ it’s like, ‘Honey, you don’t know what a diva is, you didn’t grow up with my mom.’ And I mean it as a compliment, or I wouldn’t be the person I am without experiencing that. And so when people hear me say, like, ‘Dahling da da da da’ and talk that way, it’s kinda like I’m channelling my mother.”

″But ours is a story of betrayal and beauty. Of love and abandonment. Of sacrifice and survival. I’ve emancipated myself from bondage several times, but there is a cloud of sadness that I suspect will always hang over me, not simply because of my mother but because of our complicated journey together. It has caused me so much pain and confusion. Time has shown me there is no benefit in trying to protect people who never tried to protect me. Time and motherhood have finally given me the courage to honestly face who my mother has been to me.”

It seems like Carey had an imaginary image of her mother in her mind that did not coincide with the truth. The ups and downs of her life have been immense and with the memoir, Carey finally decided to let it out into the open. Carey’s mother did not want her to marry a black man, a situation that caused Carey hurt and pain. She talks about her parents’ marriage and subsequent divorce as the backdrop of this issue.
