“I could never be enough, I was unlovable”: Friends Star Matthew Perry Regrets Breaking up With “Beautiful and Brilliant” Julia Roberts
Matthew Perry starred in the popular American television sitcom FRIENDS and everyone loved him as Chandler. The actor played Chandler Bing in the show for almost a decade. The American-Canadian actor is now releasing his book called, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir. Perry revealed several things in his new memoir, including his struggles with substance addiction and some secrets about his dating life. He also talked about his relationship with Julia Roberts.
Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts came into a relationship after the Pretty Woman actor made a special appearance on FRIENDS. The couple dated for around two months before Perry broke up with Roberts. In his memoir, he revealed the real reason why he broke up with the Notting Hill star.
Matthew Perry Claims Julia Roberts was Too Much for Him
Julia Roberts appeared in the second season of the NBC show alongside Perry. She played Susie Moss, Chandler’s middle school classmate turned love interest in the episode “The One After The Superbowl, Part 2”. Susie Moss takes her revenge on Chandler by leaving him in the bathroom without his clothes.
Julia Robers did not appear on the show after this episode. However, this was not the end of Roberts and Matthew Perry’s relationship. Soon they started dating and the relationship went on for two months. After dating for almost two months the couple broke off.
In his upcoming memoir, the 17 Again actor has mentioned that Roberts was too much for him. He also mentions that through the course of their relationship he started feeling insecure.
“I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts,” he shares in his memoir. The Odd Couple star shared that he was afraid that their relationship might not work out and that the Wonder star would break up with him.
Julia Roberts had a Look of Confusion on Her Face
Matthew Perry first contacted Julia Robert through fax. Perry asked her for a guest appearance on FRIENDS. The creator of the show, Kevin Bright said that the Closer star asked Perry to write a paper on quantum physics, and if does so she would agree to be the guest appearance on the show. Bright further explains that he thinks Perry did write it and faxed it to her the next day.
Kevin Bright also revealed that there was a lot of flirting over the fax machine. After Julia Roberts appeared on the show, they made it official and the couple started dating. However, the relationship lasted only for two months. Perry explained his relationship with Roberts saying, “It’s like the busiest guy in the world trying to go out with the busiest girl in the world.”
In his upcoming book, Perry explains why he broke up with Julia Roberts. Further, he said that he cannot explain the confused reaction Roberts had when he broke the news to her. He said, “She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and the TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.”
In his book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, Perry also shares that he watched his ex-girlfriend receiving Oscar for her role on Erin Brockovich while he was surrounded by fellow patients in rehab.
Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir is expected to release on November 1, 2022.
