The debate about the journey of star kids who come from famous families versus actors who make it big on their own is neverending. Nobody remembers how it all started even though there are some actors or as the internet termed them, nepo babies, who are actually great at what they do.

Nonetheless, some people can never see beyond their privileged status and the ease with which they entered the industry. One such actress is Emma Roberts, who has been known to slam this debate time and again.

In a recent interview with Flaunt, Emma Roberts sat down and discussed the trajectory of her career and the burgeoning debate of being a part of the industry through nepotism. Julia Roberts is her aunt while Eric Roberts and Kelly Cunningham are her parents. Even though she entered the industry via Nickelodeon, Roberts went on to star in some popular movies for both theatrical release and internet streaming platforms.

Addressing the viral New York Magazine article on nepo babies that featured some popular actors on the cover of the magazine, Roberts got candid about her exclusion from the article and the far-reaching consequences of such a discourse. The actress is fearless in her opinion, suggesting that she has never bagged a role because of her familial ties to popular actors. She said in the interview,

It was a cheap shot to put all the celebrity kids on the cover of a magazine on babies’ bodies. It’s like maybe the ‘Nepo Baby’ conversation would’ve been a more interesting article written intelligently in Vanity Fair with nuance, but instead, it was kind of this viral hating-on-people thing. I’ve lost more jobs than I’ve gained from being in the business. People have opinions and sometimes maybe they’re not good opinions of people in your family. I’ve never gotten a job because of it, I know I definitely have lost a couple of jobs because of it.

As is the case with every debate, the nepo baby phenomenon also has its pros and cons. No matter how many celebrities deny its existence, it is a bit easier for them to at least get their foot in the door of Hollywood, and go from there. On the other hand, actors from outside the industry have to work hard to land auditions, let alone get a good role. Roberts has predominantly been against the nepo baby title, claiming that her career did not get drastically affected due to her connections with famous people.

The Holidate actress got her lead role in a show on Nickelodeon before which, she did some small roles in movies like Blow and BigLove. Throughout her childhood, she spent time on the sets of films of her aunt Julia Roberts and her father. Naturally, a desire to become an actor herself sparked in her at a very early stage. Roberts even went on to have a small stint in the music industry as she released a couple of songs in her heyday.

Her first big break came in 2006 with the movie Aquamarine. Since then, there has been no stopping her as she has done various chic flicks and romantic comedies in Hollywood. More recently, Roberts was seen in Madame Web, a Sony and Marvel movie that bombed at the box office terribly. Though there have been no direct claims of Roberts enlisting the help of her famous family members for a role in a movie, an undeniable aura is certainly present in her career that comes with such connections.
