Thanks to cinematographer Roger Deakins, Sicario had been nominated for Best Cinematography at the 88th Academy Awards. The movie was directed by Denis Villeneuve and upon its release its in 2015, was a commercial and critical success. However, there was a particular scene that didn’t make it into the final cut.

Deakins hosts a podcast with James Deakins called TeamDeakins on which Latin American actor Benicio de Toro was recently invited as a guest. In the episode, Roger Deakins and del Toro discussed their time working on Sicario together and other impressive highlights of the latter’s career.

Sicario’s Director Cut Out One of Benicio Del Toro’s Favorite Scenes

During the podcast with Roger Deakins, it was revealed that there was a scene in the movie that was cut out and both Deakins and del Toro seemed upset about it. Deakins brought up the topic saying, “Remember that scene in Sicario, there was that wonderful scene we shot on down on a beach in Mexico with you in the water with this general, and it was really beautiful, and then it wasn’t in the film.”

To this, the Marvel actor replied that when he first saw the movie, he thought that director Denis Villeneuve might have used the scene in a dream only to realize that it wasn’t used at all. He went on to say:

“But halfway through the film, I didn’t care about it and kudos to Denis and the editor because [cutting it], I [eventually] thought it helped the movie so much because it helped kept my character [shrouded] in mystery; we [just] don’t know him.”

The actor insisted that “it’s a good example of making a film stronger, by showing or telling less.” What’s interesting here is that del Toro and Deakins had never really talked on the set of the movie. Deakins said that he didn’t feel like the actor would be interested in talking to him at that point. Luckily, they got the chance to talk on this podcast as it happens to be the longest conversation they have had.

In the Emily Blunt starrer Sicario, Benicio del Toro played the role of a prosecutor-turned-assassin Alejandro Gillick but that is not where his contribution to the movie ended. The Wolf Man star admitted that he had asked the director to cut out certain scenes where his character had opened up a bit too much to Emily Blunt’s character about his deceased parents.

Benicio del Toro explained his choice of asking the director to do so, saying that people with a heavy loss do not tend to open strangers easily about “life altering tragedies” such as losing their parents. He even claimed that he understood the director’s reasoning for not letting make that beautiful scene mentioned earlier in the final cut. He also expressed his interest in venturing into the realm of directing movies.
