“I didn’t know how it would end”: Denzel Washington Teases Ending His $383 Million Worth Action Franchise
Denzel Washington’s dashing action thriller series is concluding with its final installment. The Equalizer franchise saw success at the box office along with critical acclaim. The franchise has some of the best action movies of the past decade. Debuting in 2014, the franchise became Washington’s third most-grossing project. As the trailer of Equalizer 3 is released, fans are saddened to see the enthralling story concluding. Washington himself did not see this ending coming so quickly.
An Unexpected End To Equalizer
As the best thriller of the decade comes to an end, Denzel Washington talks about how the end is not how he saw it. As he hints that this will be the last we will see of him as Robert McCall, he commented that the character hasn’t yet found his happiness. Given the trouble McCall has been through, the film does end on a resolving note. Washington says:
“I don’t want to say he’s found happiness, and I don’t want to give it all away, but he meets someone lovely, he’s in a lovely town, and he seems to be at peace. That seems to be a good place to stop.”
Washington reflects on the journey that started in 2014, with the first of the Equalizer franchise’s release, and states he didn’t think he would be playing Robert McCall all these years later.
“I didn’t know that there were going to be three, definitely didn’t know that when we did the first one. I didn’t know how it would end.”
The director Antoine Fuqua confirmed that “this is it” for Robert McCall and, Denzel Washington.
“This is it, Robert McCall, the working-man hero, at some point he’s got to walk away from it. At some point, someone else has to pick up the ball and serve justice. He’s served his justice. He’s in a foreign place, he’s trying to find a home, find a place in the world. That’s really what’s important.”
Denzel Washington Loved Playing Robert McCall
Robert McCall, played by Washington is the protagonist of the Equalizer franchise. The former US Marine unknowingly gets involved with Russian Mafias when trying to save a teenage girl. McCall is reportedly one of the favorite characters the actor has played. The journey of these movies, on which he embarked with director Antoine Fuqua has been nothing short of fantastic. The Academy Award Winner is certainly saddened to bid his adieu.
The action is based on morality and McCall’s initial reluctance to oblige his values creates a fascinating character. Fuqua’s direction and Washington’s performance are surely performance a continuation of explosive action sequences, like in the previous films. But as the franchise comes to an end, fans wonder about future possibilities of seeing Washington in his glory as a leading man in an action film.
