“I don’t have anyone around me”: Eiichiro Oda Revealed One Piece’s Biggest Secret to His Editor Only Hours After Talking to Him
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the One Piece universe, maintains a very private life. So only a handful of people can get in touch with him. However, there’s a quick way to meet him and that is to become his editor. Well, becoming One Piece’s editor is prestigious in itself, however, it comes with a bonus perk that makes the job even more appealing.
How’ll One Piece end? This question has been bugging an entire generation worldwide. However, the mystery has yet to be disclosed, and the only persons who can are Oda and his editors, whom he told the One Piece finale personally.
Sounds intriguing? Well, Suguru Sugita, the eighth editor of One Piece, confirmed it.
Eiichiro Oda has revealed the One Piece finale to his editors
On the 17th episode of the “Gold Rush” show, hosted by Ken Watanabe, then recently appointed Sugita has a one-on-one conversation with Eiichiro Oda on the phone. During the interview, when Watanabe asked him if the author had revealed the highly anticipated One Piece finale to him, and to everyone’s surprise, he replied:
“Yes, it’s true. [He told me] about seven hours after I became his editor on the phone. He asked me whether there was anyone around. I told him no, and he said, “alright, I don’t have anyone around me either, so let’s talk,” and then he told me,” Sugita said.
The story is currently going through the Vegapunk arc, with holds some of deep mysteries of current One Piece world. Also, it’ll be Luffy’s first adventure as one of Yonko (Emperor of the sea), following his victory against the Beasts Pirates captain, Kaido in new Gear 5 mode. So, fans need to be ready as Oda sensei might put some eastern eggs there for the curious fans, which can prompt to a plot twist.
Does Eiichiro Oda have any new plans in mind after One Piece?
Since the serialization of One Piece in 1997, Eiichiro Oda never worked on a new series, except for two crossovers, Cross Epoch (2007) with Akira Toriyama and Taste of the Devil Fruit (2011) with Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro. However, if One Piece ends in a few years will the mangaka pick a new work? Suguru Sugita has its answer.
“He hasn’t decided, but he said he probably wouldn’t be able to write one. He’s already been going on for eighteen years, so just how old will he be by the time it’s all over? I think it’s more of a question as to whether he’d be able to write another long serialization after that, realistically speaking.”
As of now, One Piece has crossed 1100+ chapters and episodes, with tons of memories that brought cross-border fans together with Luffy’s adventurous tale of becoming King of Pirates. And everyone is eagerly waiting for what the genius mangaka has in store for them.
