“I don’t have much further need for Hollywood”: Johnny Depp Retires From Hollywood After Years of Humiliation Because of Amber Heard?
Johnny Depp’s career began as a teen in the 1980s TV series 21 Jump Street. His collaboration with director Tim Burton was a long run, and the duo gave incredible movies like Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and Alice in Wonderland. One of his most profitable roles was that of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. While his career in Hollywood has been a long and highly successful one, there have been multiple speed breakers too, and one such recent one was the defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
The couple was married for 15 months before Amber Heard filed their divorce in May 2016. The $7 million divorce settlement wasn’t the end of their story; instead, it was just the beginning of the mess when in 2019, this time, Depp sued his ex-wife Heard for defamation over 2018 op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post.
Johnny Depp’s Career in Hollywood Suffered Due to Amber Heard
The new French film is the first film for Johnny Depp after the legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. A significant part of Depp’s argument in the 2022 defamation trial was that he had to suffer in his professional career due to Heard’s unproven allegations. Depp told reporters,
“When you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something merely a function of vowels and consonants floating in the air, yes, you feel boycotted.” Due to Heard’s allegations and lies, Depp was made to quit the Harry Potter spin-off franchise Fantastic Beasts.
At the end of the trial, the jury ruled in Depp’s favor, and Heard was asked to pay him $10 million for damaging the reputation that made him suffer on the work front.
Why Does Johnny Depp Have No Further Need of Hollywood?
After the premiere of his new French Film, Jeanne du Barry, at Cannes Film Festival, Johnny Depp appeared before the press for further questions. Directed by and starring Maïwenn, Johnny Depp also plays the role of King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry. While talking to BBC, the actor said that the final lap of his acting career isn’t that far. Shortly, Depp wishes to shift to quieter things. His words were, “I wouldn’t say I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away,”
The three-time best actor Oscar nominee said, “I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood, myself.” Recently there have been debates and online protests about whether giving Johnny Depp such a significant platform was fair.
Still, the actor shared a befitting reply, saying, “What if one day, they did not allow me to go to McDonald’s for life because somewhere there’d be 39 angry people watching me eat a Big Mac on a loop?” pondered Depp. “Who are they? What do they care?” Johnny Depp is excited about the comeback after a long break and his new role in the new film.
