Crawford portrays The Deep, which is a parody of DC’s Aquaman. But, in contrast to Aquaman, The Deep has been through some bizarre events that could make even the bravest of performers question their choices.

The Deep has probably the most bizarre scenes in The Boys so far. He has been put through many tough decision-making situations. Talking to his own gills, questionable interactions with sea creatures, and other situations show that The Deep’s journey has been anything but normal.

Chace Crawford has had a series of weird moments throughout the show. Once, he tried to rescue a dolphin who later died in a horrible car accident. He even attempted to save a lobster from a supermarket that later got killed right in front of him.

In Season 1, he had to blackmail Starlight to perform s*xual activities with him, and in Season 3, she caught him getting intimate with an octopus. All these wild scenes led to a pretty revealing text exchange between Crawford and Jensen Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ackles revealed that Crawford sent him a message saying, “I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to work after this.” Crawford then confirmed, saying, “I think I did send that.” The moment shows how much Crawford was putting on the line for this role.

There have been many other bizarre scenes for Crawford. He has a heart-to-heart conversation with his own gills, eats live octopus, shoots semi-n*de scenes, and so on. It is often gross and absurd, and it is exactly what fans of the show expect and love.

Even before his first shoot, Crawford knew he was in for a wild ride. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he opened up about his audition process. He said,

They sent me two scenes. One scene was a confrontation with Starlight that ended up changing in the first episode. And the second one wasn’t even in the script — it was just, like, the Deep in his therapist’s office going on this monologue about how lobsters are his only friends in the world.

But the real surprise came when Crawford found out about The Deep’s intimate scene with an octopus. He even confessed to almost having a panic attack a day before shooting the scene.

It’s so funny and brilliant now, but when that came up, I was like, ‘Oh God, how’s this going to work? I was in total denial about it. And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack.

Crawford got so worried about the scene that he kept on checking and asking questions to showrunner Eric Kripke about the camera angles, how naked he had to be for the shot, and so on. However, Kripke made sure they addressed his concerns and made the scene possible.

Moreover, Crawford revealed in the interview that, despite having intimacy coordinators, none were needed for the octopus scene. The crew made sure it was shot with limited members in a closed set, but still, it was a funny and weird experience to pick up a wet octopus for Crawford.

Although Crawford had to go through all these bizarre scenes, it has definitely paid off, as The Deep has become one of the most memorable characters in the show, which already has charismatic actors like Antony Starr and Karl Urban.
