Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit the theaters earlier this year and judging by the reactions it got, it won’t be too strained to say that the second movie of the DC Studios’ franchise managed to garner nothing but the fury of their fans.

Zachary Levi returned as Shazam after the success of the first movie of the franchise, Shazam (2019), in a plot that focused on Billy Batson and his Shazamily’s struggles of handling their teenage life as well as the responsibilities and the powers of gods bestowed upon them.

Batson and his foster siblings’ new quest failed to live up to the expectation, collecting just $133.8 million at the box office. As such, there are little to no murmurs about James Gunn giving the green light for another sequel.

Zachary Levi Has No Idea About Shazam 3

The Daughters of Atlas: Hespera, Kalypso, and Anthea pose a challenge that puts question marks over Billy and his families’ superpowers and the fate of their world. The conformations, chiefly based in Philadelphia, do generate some interesting and – dare I say – impressive action sequences.

However, the general consensus was that Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ plot line had little to offer. Accordingly, it failed to captivate the audience at the box office for long.

Zachary Levi, the film’s star face, is clearly aware of the same and had little to give away when he was quizzed about the franchise’s future. “I don’t know what the future holds, because ‘Fury of the Gods’ was not well received. I have no idea where we go from here,” the 42-year-old admitted while speaking on The FilmUp Podcast.

Earlier this year, disappointed with Shazam 2’s performance at the box office, Levi even took to social media to give an insight into what David F. Sandberg, the director of the movie was trying to bring to the table, stating it’s a throwback to all the movies that “we knew and loved growing up in the 80s and 90s.”

But the American Underdog star’s impassioned post did little to lift the movie, and it’s unlikely we are going to see Levi reprising his role in a third Shazam movie.

Does James Gunn Have Any Plans for Shazam 3?

Levi isn’t the only one with a stake in the Shazam franchise that has little to offer about any plans for Shazam 3.

In January of this year, James Gunn, who’s in charge of overseeing creative aspects of DCU, named 10 projects he and Peter Safran plan to develop in the upcoming years. However, Gunn didn’t include the name of Shazam 3.

And the Shazam franchise isn’t the only one facing a bleak future in DC Universe. There’s little hope for The Flash to enlighten our screens for a second time as well after the first stand-alone movie starring Ezra Miller bombed at the box office.

Two flops in the same year are bound to shake Gunn’s confidence!
