The animated film genre has been one of the most successful genres in the entertainment world, although it still doesn’t get respect for its seriousness at times. However, there have been many big names, like Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, and Angelina Jolie, who wanted to show their skills by playing certain animated characters.
Speaking of popular characters, Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the most popular speedsters across all genres. After two very successful films, the franchise is coming back with its third installment, and this time, seems like it has outdone itself by bringing another Hollywood A-lister in the cast.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Brings Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves Together
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action/animated hybrid adaptation of a popular video game series by Sega. The film is about Sonic, who is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with superspeed, and he ends up on Earth after being attacked by an echidna tribe.
Ben Schwartz gave the voice of Sonic, and the live-action cast included Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, aka Eggman. The interesting thing is that Carrey wanted to retire at the time, as he told Access Hollywood (via Variety) that he had “done enough.” But something about playing Robotnik attracted him, and he decided to postpone his retirement.
Not only that, it seems like Carrey will be playing 2 characters in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The recent trailer reveals another character at the end, is Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.
Along with him, Idris Elba is making his return as Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 3. He first played the character in Sonic 2 and then again in the spin-off TV series Knuckles that premiered on Paramount+ a few months ago.
Besides these two, Keanu Reeves has also joined the cast as Sonic’s rival, Shadow. Judging by the trailer, it seems that Reeves’ character will be dark and edgy, as the narrator says Shadow’s backstory is similar to Sonic’s, but where Sonic found “family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss.”
Fans have been expressing their excitement online as all three A-listers of Hollywood are in one movie. Some are even jokingly addressing that there must be something about Sonic the Hedgehog that always manages to bring in big names even if they had different plans, like in the case of Jim Carrey.

Let's be honest, Sonic is a hit with kids and adults. It's wider range of viewers has the bigger chance for success. All 3 of my kids are hyped for it, OH, so are my wife and I. Everyone loves these movies. Great choice for these actors.

The trailer for Sonic 3 has recently been dropped, and it looks promising. Reeves brings a serious and dark tone to his character, and Carrey, as expected, is as hilarious as ever.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Cast and Plot
The cast looks stacked for the movie. Apart from Schwartz, Carrey, Irdis, and Reeves, Colleen O’Shaughnessey will be seen making her return as Tails. The live-action cast is also getting some additions, like Krysten Ritter, who will be playing Director Rothwell. Cristo Fernández, James Wolk, and Sofia Pernas will also appear in mystery roles, among others.
The plot of the film is linked to the mid-credit scene in Sonic 2 where Shadow was teased. He is going to be the big bad this time, and the trailer shows him being way more powerful than Sonic as his allies altogether. So powerful that they had to take a desperate help from Dr. Robotnik himself.
The first trailer gives a hint of what is about to come. Sonic is seen living his best life with his friends, but then Shadow shows up and ruins the party.
There is a lot of action, some jokes, and hints at Shadow’s tragic backstory. It looks like this might be the darkest and most action-packed Sonic movie yet.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
