“I enjoyed that tremendously”: Christopher Nolan Watched Oppenheimer’s Rival Barbie Star Ryan Gosling’s $472M Movie 3 Times
The man with a vision beyond a cinematic timeline, who can blend storytelling with science in such a way that can rake in billions needs no description around the world. Christopher Nolan and his spectacular cinematic projects are a treat to our eyes and the logical thinking brain.
As his magnum opus biographical drama is gradually inching towards its official entry to the billion-dollar club, the legendary filmmaker’s Oppenheimer is already a critical blockbuster of 2023. Though Christopher Nolan’s projects speak volumes about his love for science, not many people know that he loves romantic dramas too.
Christopher Nolan Loved Watching Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone’s La La Land
During an interview with the reputed media outlet Entertainment Weekly in 2017, Christopher Nolan appeared for the promotion of his war-based drama Dunkirk. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker spoke about Ryan Gosling’s La La Land and mentioned that he really loved the movie. He said-
“I went back to see that a couple of times,” Nolan said. “I enjoyed that tremendously. I saw that three times myself.”
While talking about what exactly the audience wants to see in the movies, the Inception director said-
“Funnily enough, studio executives always talk about what form of entertainment are you giving people. People have paid for a babysitter. Do they really want the guy to die at the end? That’s very true when you have kids, so your tastes do tend to go more mainstream in that period because you want some sort of guarantee of entertainment.”
Made on a budget of $40 million, the critically acclaimed project of Damien Chazelle went on to collect a staggering amount of $448 million worldwide. La La Land dominated the 89th Academy Awards with a list of nominations and awards.
Christopher Nolan On Barbenheimer Trend
As both Oppenheimer and Barbie saw their theatrical release on the same day i.e. June 21, the entire world gripped the Barbenheimer fever-the internet phenomena that began way before the simultaneous release of both blockbusters. During an interview with the entertainment outlet IGN, the Interstellar director spoke about Barbenheimer. He said-
“Summer, in a healthy marketplace, is always crowded, and we’ve been doing this a long time. I think for those of us who care about movies, we’ve been really waiting to have a crowded marketplace again, and now it’s here and that’s terrific.”
Cillian Murphy, who played the character of the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the biographical epic, even said –
“I think it’s great. I mean, I’ll be going to see ‘Barbie.’ I can’t wait to see it. I think it’s just great for the industry and for audiences that we have two amazing films by amazing filmmakers coming out on the same day. Could spend a whole day in the cinema, what’s better than that?”
The race at the box office between both the blockbuster is evidently led by Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie. With an excellent promotional and marketing strategy devised by the American multinational toy manufacturing company Mattel and the billion-dollar production house Warner Bros, Barbie not only took over the box office but even ruled the retail market worldwide.
