The highly anticipated sequel, Joker 2, is finally out, but the excitement surrounding it has had a sharp decline due to various reasons. 2019’s Joker starred Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. It followed the story of Arther Fleck, an aspiring comedian whose mental illness and nihilism led him to start a revolution against the rich people of a decaying Gotham City. The film became a hit with the critics as well as the audience. It not only occupied the spot of the highest-grossing R-rated movie for 5 years but also won 2 Academy Awards.

This obviously led the studios to greenlight a sequel. The sequel Joker: Folie à Deux sees Arthur in the custody of Arkham State Hospital awaiting trial for a series of murders he committed a couple of years ago. It is in this hospital that he meets Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel (Lady Gaga), who turns out to be his great admirer and is willing to go to great lengths to keep Joker by her side.

Everyone was stoked when the sequel was announced and was eagerly looking forward to seeing how this part of Arthur’s life unfolds. That excitement slowly began to turn into wariness and disappointment when the trailers were dropped, and the movie appeared to be somewhat like a musical.

Now, that disappointment has only amplified after watching the movie. Fans noticed that a scene from the trailer was not there in the film. Here is what some of them had to say about it:

In the scene, Lee and Joker are performing synchronized high kicks on the stairs of a grand building while they are surrounded by a crowd of people on both sides. There are also a few policemen trying to keep the situation in control.

Joker 2 Might Not Be Able to Replicate the First Film’s Box-office Success

This year started off slow for the box office with even big banners like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga not doing as well as expected. Only Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel Studio’s Deadpool & Wolverine turned out to be the saving grace with billion-dollar collections.

Joker 2 was expected to keep this trend going and follow in the footsteps of the first movie, but it does not seem capable of doing that. Variety reported that it has made $7 million in Thursday previews, which is approximately half of the $13.3 million that the first movie made.

The first movie had a $96.2 million opening weekend, but the sequel is predicted to make $50 million to $65 million in the same duration. So, it seems very unlikely that this movie will be able to touch the billion-dollar mark like its predecessor. It also has to be noted that this movie has a far bigger budget than the last one so this kind of performance might not mean well for the studio.

Joker 2 is now in theatres.
