Nothing really screams a good monster movie quite like Godzilla. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is an upcoming monster film surrounding the legendary Kaizu Godzilla and Kong. Directed by Adam Wingard, it is a direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong and the seventh installment as well as the fifth film in the MonsterVerse. Its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong, had huge success even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. So, the production house is anticipating the same success for this movie as well.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will bring back the monsters in a much-reformed form. The makers have revamped the looks of the monsters into something that is supposed to translate even better with the story. However, while most are welcoming the changes with open arms, many fans seem far from happy to see their favorite Kaizus getting a makeover that they did not ask for.

Godzilla x Kong‘s new look leaves the audience split between admiration and a “bad feeling”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire would reunite the two legendary monsters once more on the big screen. However, their looks have been drastically revamped to suit the franchise’s new ambitions. While speaking to Total Films (via. GamesRadar), Adam Wingard opened up about his vision for the two gargantuan Kaizus:

“Very specifically in the last film, I wanted Godzilla to have a continuity, to look the way that he had in King of the Monsters and the 2014 Godzilla. But then I didn’t get a chance at doing my version of Godzilla. So now I wanted to do different things with the spines, and try different colours. I didn’t want it to just be random; it’s part of the story.”

Godzilla is not the only one who will have his moment with a makeover. The makers also have plans for Kong in the movie. Adam Wingard added to his previous statement:

“And similarly with Kong, I wanted to give him some sort of new look as well. We grew his beard out, and gave him a little bit more grey hair and stuff.”

Netizens are rather split about the whole thing. While many are praising the new look and are hyped to see the magnitude of the vicious beauty it brings, many see this as an impending doom. Check out the mixed reactions below:

How Godzilla x Kong sets up a new future for the MonsterVerse

According to theories so far, Godzilla and Kong are expected to team up and face a bigger foe than them. It sets up an interesting world where the two can co-exist for the sake of a bigger threat and it will hopefully lead to some great avenues in the future of the franchise. It might also lead to introducing new characters into the MonsterVerse.

Talking about new characters, Kong’s son will be introduced in the movie, which will potentially open up the possibility of passing on his legacy. The movie can also further explore the origins of Godzilla and Kong on Skull Island and Hollow Earth. Hollow Earth was explored for a short while in Godzilla vs Kong. Given how dedicated Dr. Ilene Hall is to explore the secrets of Skull Island, it is very much possible that she spent some time unearthing the secrets it holds in between the timelines of Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong

Godzilla x Kong will take on the big screen on April 12, 2024.
