It is often believed in the entertainment world that celebrities’ lives are filled with love and admiration. But the reality is sometimes completely different, as the pressure of fame and public opinions often affect their personal lives.
Sometimes, celebs who appear to have the utmost respect in the industry and global fan following end up being alone, and it seems like Angelina Jolie is one of them. The actress has her fair share of past struggles and ongoing legal battles that have made her change her personal life.
Angelina Jolie Doesn’t Have Close Friends
In her 30-year-long career, Angelina Jolie has seen several ups and downs, both on a professional and personal level. It started with her father, John Voight, who got divorced when Jolie was a small child. According to The New York Times, Voight’s infidelity changed the dynamics of her family, which affected her upbringing as well.
Besides that, Jolie also went through a number of relationships and divorces once she started her career. Her first marriage with Jonny Lee Miller ended in divorce shortly after. Her second marriage was with Billy Bob Thornton, which also ended in divorce after 2 years.
Moreover, according to Entertainment Weekly, Jolie’s father said some harsh words after her second divorce, which affected their already weakened relationship. But perhaps the worst divorce for Jolie would be the Brad Pitt one, which became a legal battle that started in 2016 and is still going on today.
All these personal setbacks have affected Jolie in a way that she has become more reserved and private. The actress, who once led a public life, made a conscious decision to have a few friends now. When asked about whether she has any “3 am friends,” Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter,
I don’t really have those kinds of relationships. Maybe it’s losing your parent young. Maybe it’s working. Maybe it’s being somebody who’s been betrayed a lot. I don’t have a lot of those warm, close relationships as much that I lean on. But I have a few, and a few is enough.
However, Jolie also mentioned that she has a couple of people whom she trusts, and she is not someone who wishes to be alone to have her guilty pleasures, as she said, “My guilty pleasure is being with somebody.”
Jolie has been going through a lot lately. Her divorce from Pitt, ownership battle of their Chateau Miraval winer, kids dropping Pitt’s name from their last name, and being in constant limelight amid all these controversies. However, she is somehow managing to focus on her work as she is coming up with Maria.
Angelina Jolie Draws Parallel to Her Maria Character
Maria is a biography of opera singer Maria Callas, and Jolie will be playing her role in it. The actress trained herself how to sing and breathe, along with the mannerisms of an opera singer to perfect the role. But it is her story that brought Jolie closer to the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Pablo Larraín said,
Angelina has an enormous amount of mystery. I thought she could play this woman who is looking to find her own identity.
The film just had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2024, and its official Netflix release date is yet to be announced. It will explore the story of how Callas returned to singing and performing for the crowd who once disliked her for her voice and temperament.
Jolie told in her The Hollywood Reporter interview that people disliked Callas as she was not living according to them, which gave her trauma.
However, she worked hard to get her respect back, and this made Jolie empathize with the character. Jolie also revealed that she started her career to help her mother with the bills, and quite similarly, Callas also began singing just for her survival initially.
As Jolie said in the interview, “I’m making her (Maria Callas) pain personal to me,” it can be understood how she felt a connection with Callas’ whole traumatic past and working hard for redemption. And it looks like Jolie is doing the same in her real life too.
