For nearly two decades, Hugh Jackman embodied the rough-edged hero Wolverine across multiple X-Men films. But when the actor first donned the iconic adamantium claws, he had one fellow countryman in mind that he thought could eventually take over the role – Heath Ledger. Jackman once reminisced about his early days as Wolverine and revealed that Ledger was his initial pick for a potential successor. Of course, Ledger’s untimely death in 2008 prevented that from ever coming to fruition. But Jackman believes Ledger had the versatility and intensity to reinvent Wolverine and make the character his own.

Hugh Jackman confirmed to reprise his signature role one more time in Deadpool 3, speculation is again heating up about who could follow in his footsteps and play a rebooted Wolverine. Though Heath Ledger may have been Jackman’s choice, several rising stars have emerged as fan favorites for the coveted part.

As per Yahoo Movies, in a 2014 interview looking back on his X-Men tenure, Jackman was asked about the inevitability of someone else playing Wolverine someday.

He responded, “Originally, when I played it [first], when he was alive God rest his soul, I thought Heath Ledger could be a good young version of [Wolverine].” He further added, “It would be a little weird [seeing someone else as Wolverine],” said Jackman, “I know it’s going to happen.”

Ledger never got the chance to put his own spin on the clawed mutant hero. But Jackman clearly felt the intense, charismatic Australian actor possessed the right qualities. Like Jackman, Ledger also starred in a major comic book film as the villainous Joker in The Dark Knight. With his dedication to transforming for roles, Ledger perhaps could have brought a fresh take on Wolverine while still paying homage to Jackman’s portrayal.

Though Ledger’s tragic death prevented Jackman’s original wish, a new generation of actors has since emerged as potential successors. For many fans, top choice Taron Egerton seems destined to be the next Wolverine. His blend of grit, charm, and physicality in the Kingsman films makes him an ideal fit.

Egerton has also shown off impressive musical chops in Rocketman. As Jackman famously injected song and dance into his Wolverine with a Les Miserables movie cameo, Egerton could bring a similar well-rounded set of talents. His versatility evokes why Jackman eyed Ledger originally. And Jackman himself recently gave Egerton a vote of confidence, while advising the young actor to be patient for his opportunity. Daniel Radcliffe is one of the names that came up.
