SUMMARY
  • Andrew Garfield earned widespread recognition for his role as Spider-Man.
  • He reprised the character in 2021 and would love to do it again if his only condition is fulfilled.
  • He is not very keen on bringing new life into this superficial world where he has to be constantly careful.

Andrew Garfield is one of the most popular actors in the world, thanks to his role as Spider-Man in the early 2010s. He had gained enough recognition for his role as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, but that was only amplified when he was cast as the web-slinger.

Although he did his best, the movies did not turn out to be to the audience’s taste. The consequence was that Sony decided to shelve the third movie. That, however, does not deter the fans from wondering if he will put on the suit again. He has already done it once for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, and he won’t mind doing it again but only if his one condition is fulfilled.

Playing a world-famous superhero (or supervillain, for that matter) on the big screen is perhaps every actor’s dream. It was no different for Andrew Garfield, who began doing theatre work in 2004 and made his film debut by 2007. At the time, he had noted to Variety that he did not expect to be recognized by the audience later. Little did he know what awaited him once he began starring as the young Marvel superhero.

When he succeeded Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, he had big shoes to fill. As exciting as it was, it did not take long for everyone, including him, to understand that it was not working out. He took a year-long break from the screens and returned with quite a bang with roles in Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge. He earned his first Oscar nomination for the latter of these.

His run as Spider-Man might have ended back in 2014, but fans could not help but wonder if they would get the chance to see him in the suit ever again. Their wishes were fulfilled in 2021. They might just be lucky enough to see it happen again if the 99 Homes actor’s only condition is fulfilled. He recently told Esquire:

For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and
odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.

He admitted his love for the character and claimed it brings “joy”. He stated that if joy is something his reprising the role brings, he would happily do it again. Well, it is not every day he offers to be Spider-Man again, so we might as well take him up on the offer.

At 41, Garfield is at the peak of his career as well as his life. He has resolved his conflicts with his father, dealt with grief when his mother passed away due to pancreatic cancer, and has learned to deal with all the challenges that fame brings.

In his upcoming movie, We Live in Time, he plays a father. This got him thinking about if he wants children of his own, but he knows how hard it can be to be a parent. He insists:

I’m already a tired guy. I don’t want to be a tired dad.

His answer is also affected by the fact that this is not the kind of world he would like to bring a child in. The superficiality of it all has him asserting that everyone should consider bringing new life here. Not to mention the tabloid scrutiny he faces due to the nature of his job.
