American actress Meryl Streep made her stage debut in 1975 with Trelawny of the “Wells” and is known as the best actress of her generation. In her first year in New York, Streep worked in five more roles like Henry V, The Taming of the Shrew, and Measure for Measure. Though Streep never aspired to be an actor, Robert De Niro’s performance in Taxi Driver had a great impact on her. Kramer vs. Kramer and The Deer Hunter were two of her early commercial successful films and won her critical appreciation as well as accolades from fans.
Streep’s first leading role was The French Lieutenant’s Woman and more success poured in for her when she starred in the drama Sophie’s Choice. Her first non-fictional character to portray on-screen was Karen Silkwood, in the movie Silkwood (1983). Despite her success, Streep has always been modest about her achievements in cinema and has a down-to-earth personality who can imitate a wide range of accents.
Why Brian Cox Never Liked Meryl Streep?
During Variety’s latest Actors on Actors interview, Succession actor Brian Cox and Emily Blunt had a chit-chat about The Devil Wears Prada when the actor recalled an incident where he told the legendary Meryl Streep that he never liked her as he was jealous of her amazing work.
“I met her once, and I said, ‘I never liked you.’ And she went, ‘What?'” Cox recalled to Blunt. “I said, ‘I never liked you because I was jealous.’ How can anybody be that good?”
Brian Cox and Meryl Streep worked in Spike Jonze’s 2002 dramedy Adaptation, but they did not get an opportunity to share the screen together. The two legends of Hollywood also voiced characters in Wes Anderson’s 2009 stop-motion animated comedy Fantastic Mr. Fox.
At a point during the interview, Cox asks Blunt about her start with the film, The Devil Wears Prada, to which Emily Blunt replied that it was an extraordinary overnight shift in her life when the film came out. Further, Cox shared, how much he loved the film and said,
“I loved it. And to work with one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, I so envy you. One of my ambitions, before I snuff it, is to work with Meryl.”
