“I really think it’d be fun to cast…”: 1 Year Before Fighting Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises, Marvel Director Wanted Tom Hardy as Young Wolverine in $353M Movie
In the vast world of superheroes and formidable characters, lies acclaimed directors who work behind their success. One of the world’s most creative directors, Matthew Vaughn has revealed his daring dream. A dream to cast Warrior star Tom Hardy as a young Wolverine.
A tempting idea emerged in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just a year ago when Tom Hardy became a ruthless character who clashed with Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises. The director of X-Men: First Class had an amazing thought of casting Tom Hardy as Young Wolverine in his movie $353M Movie.
Tom Hardy’s Almost Young Wolverine Journey Before The Dark Knight Rises
In an interview, director Matthew Vaughn shared his visionary plans for an X-Men trilogy, including his desire to cast Tom Hardy as a young Wolverine set in the 1970s. Vaughn expressed his initial intent to follow up the ’60s period drama X-Men: First Class with a film set in the ’70s, featuring Wolverine and the X-Men of that era. This ambitious journey would have culminated in an X-Men: Days of Future Past movie, uniting all the previous cinematic incarnations of the X-Men, as per his original concept. Vaughn’s admiration for Tom Hardy was evident in how passionately he advocated for the idea of casting the Warrior star for this role. The director told Coming Soon that:
“When I finished the “Days of Future Past” script with it ready to go, I looked at it and said, “I really think it would be fun to cast Tom Hardy or someone as the young Wolverine and then bring it all together at the end.”
Although Matthew Vaughn envisioned concluding his X-Men trilogy with Days of Future Past, his plans didn’t align with the vision of 20th Century Fox. Consequently, the studio went ahead and released X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. Bryan Singer, the original X-Men director, returned to helm the project, while Vaughn shifted his focus to other endeavors, notably the Kingsman franchise. This installment was succeeded by X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, and then Dark Phoenix in 2019 which is directed by Simon Kinberg.
