“I regret that decision”: DC Director Admits He Made a Mistake With Jared Leto’s Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’
The Suicide Squad is a shady crew with an eye for embarking on very risky missions for the American government. They dance with danger and deal with death as if it were nothing unusual. Along with humor, this movie also took a risk by fusing hearty laughter with brutal realism and deep subjects.
Despite the 2016 movie The Suicide Squad’s monetary success, it couldn’t escape criticism, which was mainly directed at the antagonist’s casting. The lovable goofballs of The Squad took center stage, but the underwhelming portrayal of the villain struck moviegoers as a major flaw. The director recently discussed his thoughts on Jared Leto’s Joker seven years after the film’s debut.
David Ayer shares his regret with Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad
Seven years after Suicide Squad’s debut, director David Ayer has spoken out about a regret he has regarding Jared Leto’s version of the Joker. Jared Leto’s unconventional and distinctive portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad in 2016 wasn’t exactly well received. It’s interesting that parts of his plot involving Harley Quinn were removed from the final version, leaving fans wondering what happened.
Director of the movie David Ayer confirmed that Warner Bros. cut a major amount of Leto’s performance from the film, allowing fans to speculate about the Joker’s intended plot. Ayer recently expressed regret over the infamous “Damaged” tattoo that appeared on Leto’s forehead in the film on Twitter after taking responsibility for his previous decisions. Originally, this tattoo was intended to read “Blessed” and not “Damaged.”
Ayer fully acknowledged that the choice to modify the tattoo was his, and he added, “I regret that decision.” This isn’t the first time Ayer has talked about regretting changing the tattoo. He said back in March 2023 that it was the one option that, aesthetically, he wished he could go back and change, adding, “Caught a lot of smoke for it obviously.” People are currently anticipating Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad, which the director has acknowledged is much better than the previously released version.
Will David Ayer’s Cut of the Suicide Squad be released?
Just last year, Ayer enthusiastically defended his original edit of Suicide Squad on social media, emphasizing that Warner Bros.’ changes went much beyond simply “a couple of scenes being added.” David Ayer’s recent positive update on the probable release of his Suicide Squad director’s cut has made his fans crazy with anticipation.
Ayer answered a question from a Spanish-speaking fan asking if the Ayer’s Cut would be made available to audiences under James Gunn’s leadership. He gave fans who were eagerly awaiting the director’s cut hope that positive changes were on their way by implying that he and Gunn had already had conversations.
Ayer was apparently given assurance by DC Universe’s co-head James Gunn that his version of the movie would eventually be released, which is a sign of hope. Despite the lack of a firm release date, this encouraging detail has fans eager for the chance to see Ayer’s cut of the film.
