Emily Blunt opens up about missing the opportunity to star as Black Widow in MCU
During an appearance on The Howard Stern podcast, actress Emily Blunt who is very significantly known for her characters from Devil Wears Prada, A Quiet Place, and many more, went ahead to discuss how she had missed out on an opportunity to star as Black Widow in the Marvel Universe. She said,
“I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels. It was a bit of a heartbreaker for me because I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films that I do, so that was tough.”
Blunt continued,
“They [Fox] kind of have a bit of hold over you. There were other movies that I would want to do. I think it just became evident that I needed to get rid of this optional picture deal because it was going to just hang over me for a long time and I didn’t want that.”
Emily Blunt who was offered the role of Black Widow for Iron Man 2 noted that she is never left with a feeling of regret when she turns something down pointing out that she is a huge fan of Iron Man. Actress Scarlett Johansson ended up playing Black Widow across seven Marvel movies and is one of the fan-favorite characters in the franchise. Blunt said the best girl got the part and Johansson’s Black Widow met her fate in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Emily Blunt believes she has no appetite for superhero movies
The actress in her conversation with Howard Stern shared that she feels that the superhero genre has become exhausting, adding,
“It’s not that it’s beneath me. It’s not. I love Iron Man and I wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. It would have been amazing, but I don’t know if superheroes are for me. They are not up my alley. I think it’s been exhausted. We are inundated. It’s not that it’s only the movies, it’s the endless TV shows as well.”
However, Blunt noted that if she is offered a really cool superhero character, she’d be open to accepting it, but it has to interest her. She also added that she cannot explain much but superhero movies leave her feeling a little bit cold so the character has to be really cool for her to play.
After losing out on the opportunity to work with Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 2, Emily Blunt finally appeared alongside the actor in recent release Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
