Deadpool & Wolverine is coming, and it is bringing a lot of surprises along with it. The latest teaser showed some familiar faces popping up in unfamiliar places. Among them, one character that got everyone talking is Laura, aka X-23, played by Dafne Keen.
It looks like fans will be getting a reunion after 2017’s Logan. Keen is reprising her role as Laura, and it has got fans wondering what the father-daughter clawed duo will do this time.
Dafne Keen’s X-23 Return Got Her Worried
It has been 7 years since Keen last used the adamantium claws. That is a long time, and it wasn’t all smooth sailing for her to step back into Laura’s shoes after all these years.
Dafne Keen played the character when she was 11, and now she is asked to do it again at 19. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Keen revealed that she dropped her phone in the bath when she got the news of her return as Laura in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, when she got on set, she started feeling nervous about the role.
I was a bit freaked out. I was like, ‘I will have forgotten how to play her. She’s not in me anymore.’
It is not hard to see why she would be nervous. Laura in Logan was a wild, mostly silent force. But people change a lot between 11 and 19. Keen was not sure if she could tap into that same energy after so long.
To prepare for the role, Keen rewatched Logan. She tried to remember what was going through her mind as a young performer. But when it came time to film, the nerves were still there.
We went straight into this pretty intense scene. I know I was freaking out. As soon as they said, ‘Rolling!’ I really felt like we were back doing Logan. It was like eight years hadn’t passed.
After all these years, Keen was now able to understand the parental rage that happened in Logan for her character and she was able to feel Laura’s emotions of getting a father and immediately losing him after a few days. However, she revealed in the interview that the first thing she did for Deadpool 3 was stunt training to fit in the role.
The biggest change for Laura this time around is that she has got a voice. Keen shared that Laura has a neutral accent as she has been around a lot of English-speaking people. She also speaks a little bit in Spanish which is a nod to her own upbringing in Madrid.
New Details in Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer
The latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer has some new details and Easter eggs for fans. It has got multiple Deadpools which will be Deadpool Corps, some more emotional moments where Ryan Reynolds gets serious with Hugh Jackman about his character’s family, and first look at the grown-up Laura.
In the trailer, Laura is having what looks like a heart-to-heart with Wolverine by a campfire. It is giving off father-daughter vibes, which makes sense given their history in Logan.
Fans might see Deadpool Corps in action. Lady Deadpool, Headpool, and Cowboy Deadpool can be seen stepping through a portal. The trailer’s tone is emotional this time, focusing on Deadpool’s loved ones and Wolverine’s legacy as an X-Man.
As it is expected, there will be a lot of fourth-wall-breaking and R-rated humor mixed with emotions. Deadpool is also seen making Spider-Man web shooter sounds, which might be hinting at a Spidey cameo.
Moreover, there are some Loki Easter eggs, and it looks like the TVA might be playing a bigger role than previously expected. There is also an Infinity Stone-encrusted sling ring, and it looks like time and reality stones are attached to it and it might be essential to travel through the multiverse.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
