In playing his 600-pound character Charlie in the Venice Film Festival premiering movie The Whale, Brendan Fraser said he needed to learn how to move differently. In Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Fraser played Charlie, a man struggling with congestive heart failure who slowly eats himself to death. After leaving his wife and then eight-year-old daughter, Ellie, Charlie begins a relationship with Alan, a former night-school student who became the love of his life, but Charlie eats to deal with the pain of losing the love of his life.
Fraser said in a press during the movie premier,
“I developed muscles I did not know I had.”
“I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] is undulating. It gave me an appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be incredibly strong mentally and physically to inhabit that physical being.”
The charming actor put on up to 600-pound for his role in the movie. In 2018, Fraser revealed that years of performing his acts and being physically violated by a prominent Hollywood figure ended his acting career and left him depressed and miserable.
The Whale was released in theaters on December 9, 2022, and broke a box office record for 2022.
