Although this was not the only time that the La La Land star was given this reason for being given the role. Even the director of The Notebook, Nick Cassavetes had the same reason to cast Rayan Gosling in the movie. He said director Nick Cassavetes “straight up told me: ‘The fact that you have no natural leading man qualities is why I want you to be my leading man.’”
Regardless of why the roles were given to Gosling, he gave his best performance in both the movies which helped both the movies and Gosling’s career to stand out in the industry.
Ryan Gosling Embracing the “Too Old to Play Ken” Controversy
Ever since the release of Barbie’s trailer, Ryan Gosling has been widely criticized for his role as Ken in the movie. Many fans and critics said he was ‘too old’ for playing the role of Ken. Responding to this comment Gosling said during his interview with GQ,
“I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with”
He continued,
“It is funny, this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this? And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it’s like, ‘No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.’ No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never fucked with Ken. That’s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So, your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.”
In an industry where every actor ensures to work in comfort, Ryan Gosling has set the perfect example of going out of the league for every role that he has played in his career. After all the criticism that Gosling, he has set the best example of expecting the unexpected.
