Daisy Ridley recalls how Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy made her feel lucky

Ahead of the release of Young Woman and the Sea, actress Daisy Ridley spoke to Collider, where she was asked about another actor who paved the way for her, just like her character, who became the first woman to swim across the English channel. She said,

I am standing on the shoulders of giants in terms of female actors, and there are many people who have come before me who broke down boundaries, had difficult conversations, and had to fight battles, some of which are public and some of which I’m sure we will never know, for people to be paid equally, to be heard on set, and for there to be safe working environments.

Ridley added that there are too many names, and a lot of those things existed behind closed doors, and each person was shifting just a little bit closer to where the industry is right now. The host asked the actress, just like how her movie is going to make an impact in society and encourage people to go out and swim if there was any movie that inspired her. The Star Wars actress said,

It didn’t inspire me to try something new, but when I watched The Fall Guy, I did think I was so lucky that I’ve got to do films with loads of stunt work because that is great, and I love stunt work. It’s difficult and it can be dangerous, but stunt teams are so great. I watched it and thought this was really cool.

The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt received positive reviews upon its release and set up a Guinness World record for the most cannon rolls performed in car. Daisy Ridley mentioned that she feels really lucky and happy that she got to do the full gamut of things, including Young Woman and the Sea.

Director details Daisy Ridley’s preparation for Young Woman and the Sea

Directed by Joachim Rønning, Young Woman and the Sea is a story about Trudy Ederle, who, back in 1926, became an inspiration as she was the first woman to swim across the English Channel. In an interview with Variety, the director shared that he wanted to make the movie as real as possible.

I wanted to be in the ocean. I wanted to be in the real elements with Daisy Ridley, swimming through the currents and cold water. We built special rigs. We practiced in a tank with the camera equipment. He (Oscar Faur) designed wires and cranes for us to capture all the swimming in the film.

The director went ahead and went into detail. Daisy Ridley trained with English Olympic medalist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor for months and months. She also learned how they swam 100 years ago, adding,

When she went into the water, she was tough. She never complained and was always going for it and asking, ‘Do you want one more?’ and her lips were turning blue.

Joachim Rønning also mentioned that the jellyfish swarm is one of the few elements used in the movie that is CG. He noted that while making a movie if incidents like the jellyfish swarm do not look real, they’re taken out of the story, which is why they worked hard on creating the jellyfish sequence and planned it for a long time.

Young Woman and the Sea is available in cinemas.
