“I won’t say anything over here”: Johnny Depp Was Taken Aback After He Was Refused a Meeting to Prepare for $99M Crime Drama Film Starring Dakota Johnson
Actor Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of the best actors that the world has witnessed in the past three decades. The 59-year-old actor became a household name after he played the role of Tom Hanson in the 1980s TV series 21 Jump Street. Over the years, he managed to gain a lot of popularity thanks to his outstanding acting skills.
Today, the actor is a well-known name and a lot of fans would kill to meet the actor in person. However, Johnny Depp once wanted to meet a man, but that man refused to meet him. The actor was playing that man in a movie and wanted to meet him to understand him.
A man refused to meet Johnny Depp
Back in 2015, actor Johnny Depp made an appearance at the Venice Film Festival and revealed that there was once a man who refused to meet him despite the actor trying his best to set up a meeting. The man was James Whitey Bulger, the man Depp played in Black Mass (2015). The actor revealed that he wanted to meet the crime boss before filming to play him in the best possible way. Bulger was in the prison at the time, and he refused to meet the actor.

Whitey Bulger was not a huge fan of books/movies made about him
The actor further revealed that he got in touch with Whitey Bulger’s attorney, Jay Carney, and tried to set up a meet but it seems like Bulger wasn’t a huge fan of books/movies made about him. The actor said,
“I asked to meet James Bulger through his attorney, Jay Carney, and—as expected—I knew this wouldn’t happen, Bulger respectfully declined because I don’t believe he was a great fan of the book Black Mass… I also don’t believe he was a great fan of any of the books written about him.”
A lot of books have been written about James “Whitey” Bulger, who was charged with 19 counts of murder. He was caught in June 2011 and died in prison in October 2018 due to blunt force trauma caused by other inmates.
Whitey Bulger’s attorney helped Johnny Depp
After Whitey Bulger declined to meet Johnny Depp, the actor still needed to understand the type of person Bulger was. So, Whitey Bulger’s attorney, Jay Carney, decided to help him. He said,
“Jay Carney was very helpful to me in finding James Bulger. First and foremost, he said, ‘I ain’t gonna say nothin’ that Jimmy wouldn’t want me to say. I will say this, and I’ll say this, but I won’t say anything over here.’ But Jay came to the set a couple of times and watched, and he gave me a lot of confidence because he said he could feel his old friend in what I was doing, which was a very high compliment. It was very, very important to look as much like Jimmy Bulger as humanly possible. My eyeballs are black as the ace of spades, so clearly the blue contacts… they were hand-painted because they needed to be piercing, they needed to cut right through you.”
The actor’s final look was on point, from a bald head to icy blue eyes, the actor looked a lot like the crime boss. His performance was outstanding as he received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
