One of the most well-known directors of all time, James Cameron is a force to be reckoned with especially when it comes to filmmaking. Amid the ongoing Sag-AFTRA strikes and the discussion around the rise of AI for screenwriting, Cameron shared his thoughts on it recently.

The director has a pretty good background in the world of Sci-fi and keeping in view his Terminator film series, Cameron also touched on the subject of the weaponization of AI which according to him seems to be a much bigger threat than it taking over the function of writers.

James Cameron Opens Up About Ongoing Discussions Around the Growing Threats of AI Against Human Beings

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA or the Writer’s Strike has brought the discussion around AI and its dangers to center stage. Although there is no solid evidence as to the exact negative consequences against human beings that AI can bring out, it is pretty clear from the use of AI these days.

The technology is already on its way to becoming a highly popular tool and with the creation of AI writing tools such as ChatGPT, screenwriters and their job appears to be in a vulnerable position these days. Some have already begun using AI to write a whole episode of a show and hence it’s a big topic of discussion. Many film directors have since been prompted with the topic with one of them being the most well-known Hollywood director James Cameron.

However, he does not seem to be particularly scared of AI taking over the creativity of human beings at least not at the moment. During a chat with CTV News, the Titanic director said,

“Let’s wait 20 years, and if an AI wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we’ve got to take them seriously,”

With films such as The Terminator and Avatar, Cameron has a significant experience in the sci-fi genre. And as such he also mentioned that his main concern surrounding AI has to do with its use in weaponry more than anything. As The Terminator suggested, it could be a big disaster for humans if the AIs start taking over the weapons and during them against the living.

James Cameron has undoubtedly excelled in the Sci-fi film genre with projects such as The Terminator series and Avatar. The latter has almost a decade of difference between the first film and the sequel released last year.

There is no question about the Success that his films have been able to achieve. And given the ongoing writer’s strike and the threat of AI, The Terminator is one film that has some similarities when it comes to the threat of AI. Furthermore, Cameron’s Avatar has also focused on environmental issues and the invasion of foreign communities on indigenous ones.
