“If Marvel calls, you gotta do it”: Kit Harington Still Holds Out Hope for His MCU Superhero Despite Doomed Fates of ‘Blade’ and ‘Eternals 2’
- Kit Harington's brief role as Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight, in 'Eternals' teased a larger future in the MCU.
- Harington's MCU future remains unclear, with no confirmed plans for his character in upcoming projects.
- Eternals' mixed response creates doubts for its sequel, and 'Blade' is still struggling to find its cast and crew.
Kit Harington is no stranger to wielding a sword. Jon Snow fans are very well aware of that, but his brief presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe left fans wanting more. Harington’s appearance as Dane Whitman in Eternals was like a small tease of something potentially big.
MCU has been the leading superhero franchise for over 15 years now, and each of its new phases introduces a new character. Harington’s Black Knight is one among them. However, after recent setbacks, the future of Black Knight looks unclear.
Kit Harington’s Journey as the Black Knight in the MCU
Kit Harington as Dane Whitman in Eternals was not just a cameo. It was a setup for something bigger, as Whitman is the alter ego of Black Knight, who has done some crazy stuff in Marvel comics.
Talking about his surprising appearance in the MCU, Harington shared in an interview with GQ that getting a call from Marvel is a big deal. He joked,
I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting. If Marvel calls, you gotta do it.
But who is the Black Knight? In the comics, Dane Whitman is a scientist who came into possession of a cursed sword known as the Ebony Blade. It gives him supernatural powers but at a cost. The bloodthirst from the sword gives another layer to a character, as it corrupts the wielder.
In the post-credits scene of Eternals, Whitman can be seen uncovering the Ebony Blade. He almost touches it before getting interrupted by an unseen voice. The voice was of Mahershala Ali, who is going to play Blade next. That scene raised expectations of fans about Harington’s future in the MCU.
Despite the excitement, Harington’s future still remains uncertain, but he is still hopeful. In an interview on Superhero Comic Con, he said,
At this stage, I don’t know. I hope he gets used. I think there’s some really fascinating parts of that character which would be beneficial to delve into and interesting.
Eternals had a poor response from critics and audience and as MCU is now focusing on setting up Doctor Doom, Eternals 2 doesn’t seem to happen anytime soon. And for Blade, it looks like the cast and crew are still being finalized, even though the film is scheduled to release on November 7, 2025.
Uncertain Future of Eternals 2 and Blade
While fans want some Black Knight action, other MCU projects face continuous challenges. Blade reboot has hit so many setbacks, from changes of directors and writers to changes of scripts. It looks like what Wesley Snipes said in Deadpool & Wolverine about “only ever gonna be one Blade” will ultimately be true.
However, Kevin Feige recently confirmed that makers are developing Blade as an R-rated film. But the constant creative team changes still create doubts. However, Harington has confirmed that there was no plan for him to appear in Blade and he probably won’t. He said in his Superhero Comic Con interview,
I was never… I think there was some misunderstanding about whether he was going to be in the Blade movie. He was never meant to be in the Blade movie and isn’t.
On the Eternals front, things are looking much worse as of now. In an interview with Inverse, Feige clearly declined any plans for Eternals 2 saying,
There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events.
The only thing that will remind people of Eternals will be Tiamut’s corpse, which is now sticking out of the Indian ocean. It will be made of adamantium which will now become the reason for war between countries that will be shown in Captain America: Brave New World.
Eternals is available to stream on Disney+.
