As Paramount Pictures announced the production of the upcoming reboot of the popular comedy franchise The Naked Gun, fans cannot contain their excitement. The last installment Naked Gun 331⁄3: The Final Insult was released back in 1994. Late Canadian-American actor Leslie Nielsen had been the face behind the comedy-drama franchise The Naked Gun ever since its inception in the late 1980s.

Recently, the studio provided an exciting update on the famous comedy-drama franchise. According to the announcement, Academy Award-nominated actor Liam Neeson would be replacing Leslie Nielsen in the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun. Fans took to X and reacted to the great news. They believe that Liam Neeson is perfect for the character of  Frank Drebin as the Irish actor even shares his initials with the late actor.

The Naked Gun franchise was derived from the widely watched television series Police Squad. With The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear followed by Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, the Leslie Nielsen-led franchise ran for more than six years from 1988 to 1994.

Original Showrunners Talk About Their Involvement In The Upcoming Reboot Of The Naked Gun

During the 35th anniversary of The Naked Gun in December 2023, the showrunner Zucker brothers and editor Pat Proft appeared for an interview with the media outlet The Hollywood Reporter. During the conversation with THR, David Zucker spoke about why they are not involved in the production of the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun. David Zucker revealed that the studio did not initiate a proposal to incorporate them in the next chapter of The Naked Gun. He said-

“Pat, Mike, and I wrote a script for Naked Gun 4, and we heard Jon Gonda at Paramount had read the script and laughed all the way through it. But somewhere along the line, they decided not to go with Pat and Mike and me. So that’s when they got Seth MacFarlane, and he has Akiva Schaffer directing Liam Neeson. I was never able to meet with Seth.”

The upcoming reboot of The Naked Guy is directed by the former Saturday Night Live writer Akiva Schaffer along with screenwriters Doug Mand and Dan Gregor. The screenwriter duo had collaborated with Akiva Schaffer on 2022’s Chip ‘n Dale; Rescue Rangers

The next installment of The Naked Gun project is set for release on July 18, 2025.
