Getting the desired roles in the movie industry is not always easy, even for someone who has made it in Hollywood. Many actors get typecast or are not considered fit for certain roles because of their image or appearance, irrespective of their talents.

It looks like Nicole Kidman has also faced this struggle too. Even after having such a long Oscar-winning career, the actress is still pushing herself to do what she desires, and there is one particular genre of films that she has been wanting to do for a long time.

Nicole Kidman has been an example of versatility in the film industry. She has done it all, from period movies to sci-fi to drama. But when the audience thinks of her, horror is not the genre that usually comes to mind. And it seems like Kidman wants to change that.

Horror films have always been there in the movie industry, and some franchises have been very successful too. But oftentimes, they are dismissed as cheap thrills, and the genre doesn’t get the respect it deserves. But Kidman doesn’t seem to care. In an interview with L’Officiel USA, she said,

I’ve not done classic horror yet. Hardcore horror. I’m putting it out there, because I watch hardcore horror. I’m a fan of Ti West!

Ti West has been a successful director, known for his horror films in particular. His films like The House of the Devil and X are known for their slow-burn tension and shocking payoffs. Moreover, he has been a favorite collaborator of the rising star Mia Goth.

Goth has recently completed her trilogy of movies with West. She has starred in X, Pearl, and recently in MaXXXine. These movies have been her career highlights so far, and the actress has certainly become the new scream queen.

Kidman has worked in a few horror films before, like The Others, The Killing of the Sacred Deer, and Stoker, which was more like a psychological thriller. And now, with Kidman wanting to collaborate with West, it looks like she is ready to follow Goth’s path for horror films.

Even after having such a long career and doing almost every type of role, Kidman still has the drive to explore new roles and characters, and she is not afraid to surprise people.

In her interview with L’Officiel USA, she talked about her roles in Batman Forever and Aquaman, and how people questioned her choices. Talking about Batman Forever role and pushing her boundaries, she said,

Everyone’s like, ’Why are you doing that?’ I’m like, ‘Because I get to kiss Batman!’ The thing people don’t understand is, it’s not about the check. A lot of the mainstream big blockbusters that I do are hopefully different.

Even for her Aquaman role, Kidman initially thought it was a horror movie when director James Wan approached her. She said, “I’d really wanted to work with him in horror.”

It has not been that easy for her to do her desired roles quite often. In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, she revealed that director Baz Luhrmann once told her that she was “not the girl next door.”

But Kidman was adamant about her passion to pick up new and different roles. In the interview, she talked about how actors feel like doing certain roles in their careers and what’s her take on that.

It interests me how the latest role you’ve played is usually the way in which you’re going to be perceived. I can see why other people go, “I’m only going to play something that everybody feels sympathy for.” That would be a disservice to the human condition for me because I’m interested in all facets of it.

Kidman also mentioned that she sees herself as an actor, not a movie star, and this mindset drives her to seek out roles that challenge her, even if they are unexpected.
