“I’m sure it would be fun”: Dolph Lundgren Would Return to Expendables 5 Under One Condition After Disastrous Sequel
The Expendables 4 not only had a disastrous opening weekend, but it also failed at the global box office despite starring acclaimed actors. From the use of CGI to the performances in the film, fans and critics couldn’t stop pouring negative comments for Expend4bles.
The film features a star-studded cast of Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox, and Dolph Lundgren who recently revealed his one condition for returning to the fifth installment of Expendables. The Wanted Man actor said that if Stallone helms the project as the director of the next film, he would love to reprise his role as Gunner Jensen.
Dolph Lundgren Would Only Return To the Expendables Franchise Under One Notable Condition
Unlike the triumphant success of the first two films of the Expendables franchise, the fifth installment that came out last year fell flat. Expend4bles met a terrible box office collection with a highly unexpected reception and reviews from both fans and critics. Another reason for the film’s failure was the nine-year-long break. While breaks in franchises are considered fruitful, Expend4bles had a reverse effect of it.

Despite having acclaimed actors in the cast, the negative reception from critics described their performance wasn’t strong enough to appeal to them. Currently, there are not many discussions about the fifth movie, and considering last year’s film, there might be uncertainty about actors reprising their roles. While talking to Screen Rant, one of Expend4bles cast members Dolph Lundgren stated one condition about returning to the next film. He said:
“Yeah, if Sly’s in charge, I think he’s working on his version of another chapter with these guys. If he’s in charge, then yeah, I’m sure it would be fun to work on it.”
Lundgren mentioned that if Sylvester Stallone crafts the next film through his vision and creativity, he would be extremely excited to be a part of the fifth Expendables. The first movie which was directed by Stallone became a hit project with fans excited about the next chapters, However, since the previous movies weren’t coming directly from Rocky star, they couldn’t generate the anticipation like before.

While Dolph Lundgren talked about his involvement in the next film, he also mentioned Sylvester Stallone’s absence while Expendables was being made. The Section Eight star commended Stallone as a director and stated that if he had directed Expend4bles, the movie might not have faced harsh comments. While expressing his reaction to the film’s reaction, Lundgren said:
“Stallone wasn’t involved like he usually is. He just played a character in it, and when he’s in charge, the quality is going to be pretty good, it doesn’t drop below a certain level.”
Explaining the challenges with scripts and the sudden change of director, the actor added:
“But he wasn’t involved, so I think the problem was with the script, and then the director was replaced, like, a month before shooting.”
Dolph Lungren was disappointed as he knew that the film wouldn’t work out if it continued to face challenges. And since Stallone only contributed as an actor, Expend4bles became a flop. The Castle Falls star also mentioned that the star-studded cast might have helped a lot in marketing, but fate had something else in mind for the fourth installment.
