“I’m talked about in the same sentence as Jesus”: Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2 Predicted Own Franchise’s Future as MCU Threequel Beats Mel Gibson Film
- 'Deadpool 3' has become the top-grossing R-rated film in North America.
- It has surpassed 'The Passion of the Christ' and is set to break more records.
- The film fulfills Deadpool’s own cheeky prediction from 'Deadpool 2.'
Ryan Reynolds’ wise-cracking Deadpool has once again broken box office records in a way that seemed almost unbelievable. It has become the top-grossing R-rated movie ever in North America.
No doubt, it is set to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made worldwide in the coming weeks. The newest Marvel film, has not only soared at the box office but has also fulfilled a rather audacious prediction made by the character himself in a previous film.
Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth Outshines The Passion of the Christ
Just over a week after hitting theaters, Deadpool & Wolverine has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in North America, pulling in $407.7 million and surpassing The Passion of the Christ, which made $370 million domestically (via The Numbers).
According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned $852 million globally, with $444.3 million coming from international markets. It has already outpaced the earnings of both previous Deadpool films.
So, while Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ held the crown for an impressive 20 years, Deadpool 3 managed to surpass its domestic box office earnings in a matter of weeks. Looks like Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool is now Marvel’s self-proclaimed Jesus. It is because he has seriously proven one of his predictions. In Deadpool 2, the Merc with a Mouth made a bold statement (a tongue-in-cheek comment, of course!), saying:
Now I’m talked about in the same sentence as Jesus. Passion of the Christ, then me. At least domestically. We beat them overseas, where there’s no such thing as religion.

It’s an impressive feat for a movie that blends raunchy humor, superhero action, and fourth-wall-breaking antics.
A Movie That Could Challenge Deadpool & Wolverine This Week
Disney is having a blockbuster year, thanks to the huge success of Deadpool & Wolverine. The film has already earned an impressive $850 million worldwide and is set to reach $1 billion by this weekend. This superhero duo has not only saved the day on screen but also for Marvel, which faced a tough year in 2023.
Deadpool & Wolverine has single-handedly revived the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film has enjoyed a smooth ride at the box office so far, things could change this Friday when the highly anticipated romantic drama It Ends With Us hits theaters.
Starring Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, the film is expected to attract a big audience and could take the top spot away from Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine is currently screening in theaters, while It Ends With Us is set to hit theaters on August 9th!
