Inside Out 2 has once again proven itself to be a cinematic masterpiece, not just for its heartwarming story but also for its clever and unexpected Easter eggs. Who would have thought that a movie about emotions would become a breeding ground for internet culture?
But Pixar has done it again with Inside Out 2. In a simple scene, the film has managed to slip in one of the most famous memes of all time. Yes, you heard it right. It’s the ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme.
Inside Out 2 Features Viral ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ Meme
The eagerly awaited Inside Out 2 keeps up Pixar’s fun tradition of hiding cool Easter eggs and references in their movies. Since Pixar’s first hit, Toy Story, in 1995, they’ve been known for sneaking in lots of fun little details and nods in their films.
In a sequence from Inside Out 2, where the character Anxiety is in control, there are an incredible number of references crammed into just one shot. But it’s the sneaky appearance of the famous ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme that will leave fans in disbelief.

It’s because almost no one will notice it. The classic photo that everyone knows appears on a screen in the scene, perfectly mimicking the original’s pose and expressions. It turns a fleeting moment into a viral sensation.
This Is How the Distracted Boyfriend Photo Went Viral Online
No doubt, the ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme is a clever nod to internet culture and shows how much attention Pixar pays to details. Behind the lens of this iconic image is Antonio Guillem, a Barcelona-based photographer. Little did he know that one particular shot would become a global phenomenon. Guillem told WIRED:
It was quite challenging to achieve face expressions that were believable. Mainly because we always have a really great work atmosphere, and almost all the time one of the models was laughing while we were trying to take the picture.
The photo, titled “Disloyal man walking with his girlfriend and looking amazed at another seductive girl,” was taken in the charming city of Gerona, Spain. Although the shoot produced many great photos, it was this one that set the internet on fire.
The meme had a strange path to fame. It first showed up in a Turkish Facebook group for rock music. After being ignored for a bit, it suddenly went viral on Twitter, with tons of new versions popping up.
Believe it or not, Inside Out 2 is still showing in theaters! You can catch it on PVOD streaming services starting August 20. Or get it on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD from September 10.
