We’ve got you if you have been confused about Web’s connection with Tom Holland’s movie or other Sony films. Madame Web is undeniably a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Univers, but despite the fact, it’s a standalone film that will focus on a new narrative rather than directly linking it with previous movies.

Madame Web Isn’t Directly Related To Sony’s Spider-Man Universe or Venom

There have been numerous speculations about whether Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney have joined the Spider-Man Universe with Madame Web. However, the director of the upcoming film S. J. Clarkson explained that this movie won’t directly connect with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe or other movies like Venom and Morbius, despite being a part of the shared Universe. The makers wanted to incorporate their creative liberty and didn’t want fans to witness something typical or a narrative that they might speculate easily.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe might look confusing to many as it runs alongside the MCU. There were rumors about Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield‘s involvement in Madame Web, that one of them would be appearing as the web-slinger, but the idea was reportedly abandoned. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director said:

“She’s definitely in a standalone world. I was able to just have free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else. That was a gift, in a way, to be able to take something and bring a fresh and I hope original take to it.”

S. J. Clarkson who contributed to the screenplay of Madame Web along with others, explained that while most superhero movies directly link to other films and their events, Johnson’s film won’t follow this typical procedure. It is a standalone film that comes after Morbius and both Venom movies.

Madame Web is set in 2003, which is years before the events in Venom and Spider-Man. The filmmaker wanted to depart from the typical superhero movie trend of interconnecting every story and continuing it with sequels. So, despite being a part of the shared Universe, Sweeney’s film isn’t directly linked with Holland’s Spider-Man or other Sony films and will solely focus on the story of Cassandra Web played by Dakota Johnson.

Dakota Johnson has finally joined the superhero genre, and while she was portraying the Web waver, the actress found her hidden talent for driving stunts. During the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Fifty Shades star talked about driving vehicles like an ambulance and even a taxicab while flaunting her driving stunt skills. The actress said:

“I got to do a day of stunt driving work, and I’m really good at it, it seems! I mean, I can do some really wild things with a car. I drove an ambulance. I drove a taxicab. I drove everything in the movie — except for flying through the air and out of a building. But other than that, I’m like, ‘Watch out, Tom Cruise.”

Considering Johnson’s confidence, seems like she can be a tough competition for Tom Cruise. The Daddio star also talked about her being skeptical about a superhero role, but eventually falling for the story of Cassandra Web and how she manages her superpowers. The origin story will also feature Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter or Spider-Woman facing off against Ezekiel Sims who seems to be hunting the movie’s protagonists.

Madame Web comes out on February 14, 2024.
