Taylor Swift is one of the biggest and highly successful artists in the world. Her songwriting and artistry have without a doubt influenced the music industry as well as pop culture over the years. But apart from her professional life, Swift has always found her way to the spotlight as her personal life has consistently been a subject of extreme media coverage.

Swift is regarded as the world’s best-selling musician with about 200 million records sold. She is one of the top musicians to be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music. Swift was recently named the Time Person of the Year 2023 and is currently on her Eras Tour, which is set to conclude on December 8th, 2024. Taylor Swift’s team was upset with the artist being labeled as a ‘closeted queer person’

In a controversial New York Times op-ed by editor Anna Marks, Taylor Swift has been labeled as a closeted queer person. The 5000-word long op-ed by Marks tries to join the dots to confirm that the artist has weaved significant LGBTQ references in her music over the years.

Marks pointed out that Swift has been trying to tell the world that she identifies with the queer community. She writes,

“In isolation, a single dropped hairpin is perhaps meaningless or accidental, but considered together, they’re unfurling of a ballerina bun after a long performance. Those dropped hairpins began to appear in Ms. Swift’s artistry long before queer identity was undeniably marketable to mainstream America. They suggest to queer people that she is one of us.”

The op-ed however does not sit right with Swift’s team. According to CNN via Advocate, a person close to the situation who requested to keep their identity anonymous said,

“Because of her massive success, in this moment there is a Taylor-shaped hole in people’s ethics. This article wouldn’t have been allowed to be written about Shawn Mendes or any male artist whose sexuality has been questioned by fans.”

They continued to explain that right now there seem to be no boundaries for some journalists especially when they write about Taylor Swift. They added it does not matter to the journalists how ‘invasive, untrue and inappropriate’ it is what they write under the name of writing an ‘opinion piece.’

Taylor Swift addressed the queer rumors in 1989 prologue

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift used the opportunity of the re-release of her 2014 album 1989 to address the queer rumors. She wrote for the prologue of the album,

“The jokes about my amount of boyfriends. The trivialization of my songwriting as if it were a predatory act of a boy crazy psychopath. I had to make it stop because it was starting to really hurt. I assumed I could fix this if I simply changed my behavior. “

Swift wrote further that she has sworn off dating and has instead decided to focus on herself, music, and her female friendships. She added,

“If I only hung out with my female friends, people couldn’t sensationalize or sexualize that right? I would learn later on that people could and people would.”

Theories about Taylor Swift being in a romantic relationship with model Karlie Kloss were often pushed at the time. Gaylors (a community of Swift’s fans who believe that she is a closeted queer) preferred Kloss over Swift’s other friends. The singer has still always tried to be a good ally to the LGBTQ community. She is currently known to be in a relationship with Travis Kelce.
