“It felt, to me, very daunting”: Christopher Nolan was Deeply Nervous About One Oppenheimer Scene Before Realising it was the “perfect metaphor”
British-American writer and director Christopher Nolan has proven himself to be one of the best filmmakers in Hollywood. He has always used out-of-the-box elements in his movies which has blown the minds of the viewers. His most recent movie Oppenheimer, has a scene that efficiently shows his cinematic skill.
Winner of many accolades like 2 BAFTA Awards, 2 Academy Awards, and 1 Golden Globe Award, Nolan has the hearts of audiences and critics. Every time the director has listened to his guts, movie fans have witnessed unique masterpieces. His 2023 blockbuster movie has a scene that the director initially doubted.
Christopher Nolan on Why the Explosion Was Silent at First
Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer came to the theaters on July 21, 2023. The film has a wonderful star cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and many others. Although Oppenheimer has won 7 Academy Awards, director Nolan was initially in a dilemma about a particular scene.
Nolan recently revealed why he muted the nuclear explosion in Oppenheimer, and how he initially felt about the decision. He stated that he had an unsettling feeling in his nerves about silencing the explosion, but later felt proud that he trusted his instinct (via X).
It felt, to me, very daunting to portray the world’s first nuclear explosion without sound.

Fans Are All Praises for Christopher Nolan
Nolan is known for using CGI as little as possible and avoided doing the same in Oppenheimer too. In an interview with Collider, the Dunkirk director explained why they avoided the usage of CGI altogether, even for the explosion scene.
The Dark Knight Rises director had Andrew Jackson as his visual effects supervisor. For those unversed, Jackson was the mastermind behind the visual effects in Mad Max: Fury Road. Under their supervision, Oppenheimer came to be what it is today.
The explosion was very much real, even if the sound reached the ears of the viewers a second or two after they saw it happen on the screen. However, no one seems to be complaining about it. In fact, they all praise it. Here is what some of them had to say:
I thought this scene was absolutely perfect

Nolan has hardly ever disappointed anyone with his work. He might not have made as many movies as some of the other directors in Hollywood, but the ones he has made are some of the best ones of all time. As long as he keeps doing what he does, the chances of people complaining are almost zero.
Oppenheimer is available for streaming on Peacock.
