Screenwriter-director-producer James Gunn is known for his work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, along with The Suicide Squad, Super, and more. He is now the co-CEO at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran and has announced that the DC Universe is going to be a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe.
Initially, when the duo announced that the first project for the DC Universe was going to be Superman but without Henry Cavill, their announcement was not met with cheers. Gunn later clarified that the story for the upcoming Superman movie is going to explore Clark Kent’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family. And now James Gunn is going to achieve something that took a long time for Marvel Studios to get right.
James Gunn announces Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to start filming in January
DC Studios has plenty of exciting projects for the audience, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is indeed a part of it. Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic book received a lot of love and positive comments based on the upcoming movie.

The filmmaker mentioned that he had recently seen the screen test for Ruthye Marye Knoll with Milly Alcock, who is playing the titular character. James Gunn added that he is very excited about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, adding that he is also very grateful that it’s another project that has been blessed from the beginning. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow becomes the second project of the DC Universe after Superman.
Actress Eve Ridley is going to portray the character of Ruthye Marye Knoll in the upcoming movie as Supergirl’s companion and kind of sidekick as the duo travels through space. James Gunn further shared with the crowd that Ana Nogueira’s pitch for the movie was one of the best he had heard. He added that she immediately wrote it and came to him with the first draft, and it was great, but with time, with a few tweaks here and there, it just got better.
James Gunn also mentioned that Craig Gillespie has been very easy to work with as well, and he cannot wait for the audience to see what they have been putting up. Back in September, THR confirmed that Matthias Schoenaerts had been finalized to play the villain in the movie. Further details about the movie have been kept under wraps for now.
Marvel took 20 movies to have first female-led superhero movie with Captain Marvel in 2019
It comes as no surprise that movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or even DC Universe have a huge impact on the audience who are consuming it. Ardent fans go back to watching the same movies again and again, which is why the studios have to be very mindful and careful with what they are putting out for the audience to watch.
DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn recently announced that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is going to be the second movie in the DC Universe, just after Superman. It should be noted that Supergirl is going to be a female-led superhero movie led by Milly Alcock. However, it took Marvel Studios 11 years and 20 movies to have its first female-led superhero movie: 2019’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson.
Despite being announced in 2014, the movie was released in 2019, and even though the actress, who did a fantastic job, received backlash for being cast. And as did the movie. Reports suggested that it grossed over $1.131 billion and became the first female-led superhero movie to pass the billion-dollar mark (via Box Office Mojo)
Captain Marvel received a lot of appreciation from audiences and critics for the story, direction, and, of course, Larson’s acting. It’s sequel, The Marvels was released in 2023, which opened to a mixed reaction and was later declared as a box-office bomb. According to Collider, Joss Whedon tried to introduce Captain Marvel in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Kevin Feige didn’t let him.
Kevin Feige wanted to introduce the character via her origin story rather than just introducing her to the MCU family. He had later mentioned that the delay was due to them figuring out how her adventures that are earthbound but her powers are based in the cosmic realm would fit in.
However, the introduction of Captain Marvel, even though delayed, was one of the best decisions of Marvel Studios because the audience wanted to see powerful women capable of doing almost everything.
Talking about female-led superhero movies is incomplete without acknowledging Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, which was released in 2017 and had opened to a positive response. Marvel Studios’ Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow released in 2021.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled for a June 26, 2026, release.
Captain Marvel is available to stream on Disney+.
