- Ryan Reynolds' old controversies have been resurfacing as his involvement in Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni drama attracted a lot of criticisms.
- Reynolds once slapped a child actor, Jesse James while filming The Amityville Horror and admitted his regret in an interview.
- Reynolds didn't just improvise a scene by exerting his power on the younger actor, but also shared some problematic comments regarding the situation.
It wasn’t a smooth path for Ryan Reynolds to achieve what he has now. He had to endure many career hurdles before becoming the humorous and successful Deadpool. Even though he had given a few hits like the rom-com The Proposal or the thrillers like Buried, he faced many setbacks and flops in his filmography. One of them has to be The Amityville Horror, a remake of the 1979 film of the same name featuring Josh Brolin.
Although Reynolds’ name has been hitting the headlines every other day for his involvement in his wife, Blake Lively, and her co-star Justin Baldoni’s drama, back in the day, the Merc with a Mouth had his share of controversies. While filming The Amityville Horror, he caused trouble by slapping a child actor in the name of improvisation. Recently, the interview started to resurface, garnering a lot of criticism against the actor.
Ryan Reynolds regretted slapping Jesse James on the set of The Amityville Horror
Ryan Reynolds plays George Lutz in the 2005 remake version of The Amityville Horror movie. The storyline revolves around Lutz who moves into a new home with his wife and children where a series of mysterious murders have happened in the past. Now, an evil presence lingers leading the family to face paranormal activities. While the OG movie was considered one of the well-made horror flicks, the remake was poorly written, had lazy backdrops, and was not scary.
Even though Reynolds’ character had no depth, he was widely appreciated for portraying such a layered role. He gave his best as a possessed George Lutz who goes on to brutally murder his own family. However, it was not his acting that received criticism, it was how he behaved on the set. To make it more realistic, he improvised a scene and slapped a child actor, Jesse James, who played one of his kids in the film.
After this incident, the Green Lantern actor faced a lot of heat from the public fire. Later, in an old interview with Radio Free, when Reynolds was asked about that particular scene, he admitted his guilt and said,
He had it coming. No, it was actually horrible. I didn’t mean to do it. It wasn’t hard or anything. He looked up like he just won the lottery. It was just so cool to him. And I look over and the script supervisor’s crying, and I’m trying to apologize to her. I don’t know what’s happening.
While Ryan Reynolds regretted what he had done on set, the interview and his behavioral patterns have been floating around amid Blake Lively‘s legal battle against Justin Baldoni.
Did Ryan Reynolds blame the Native Americans for his improvisation?
When Reynolds further jokingly blamed the Native Americans for forcing him to do such a thing as his character was possessed by them, people lashed out at the actor. In the same interview, he shared,
It was one of those great moments. In a perverse way, I was sort of excited by the fact that something happened on film that was just totally unplanned. And it just came out organically enough, and not so organically that it actually hurt anyone. So everyone walked away from it, but it was definitely disturbing.
Not only did he accidentally slap a child actor, but he also once left Denzel Washington bruised while filming Safe House. After confessing his mistake of improvising that scene in The Amityville Horror, Reynolds admitted that he played a little emotional game with his young co-stars as he didn’t talk to them and preferred a distance from them because that helped him to do his job. Now, his fans find it offensive.
The Deadpool & Wolverine actor then further explained to the interviewer that the kids were fine with his tactic and no one was harmed. Ryan Reynolds claimed that they were “little adults” and “understood the process” of filming a scene. For those who don’t know, even though the horror flick received a mixed reaction from the audience and critics, it was commercially quite successful, based on a Box Office Mojo report.
