“It was just way too much”: Blake Lively’s ‘It Ends With Us’ Erases a Major Ending from the Books Amid Rumors of “Tone-Deaf” BTS Drama
- Blake Lively's It Ends with Us seems to be attracting a lot of attention, but all of it is not positive.
- The movie has changed its ending which was different in a major way in Colleen Hoover's eponymous book.
- There seems to be some kind of drama going on behind-the-scenes of It Ends with Us.
If Ryan Reynolds’ family did not have enough spotlight with Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, his wife Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us is covering for it. Lively’s flick is the screen adaptation of the eponymous book written by best-selling author Colleen Hoover.
However, there is a tiny blip in all of this since the movie is also attracting a lot of controversy due to a major change in the movie’s ending. Not to mention, some of the behind-the-scenes drama seems to be sidelining the director, Justin Baldoni, who also starred in the film as one of the lead characters.
Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us Sees a Major Change in the Ending
It Ends with Us is a romance drama that sees a florist Lily Bloom fall in love with a neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid. The two get married, but things start getting out of hand quickly when Ryle turns out to be physically abusive, something that Lily despises her late father for.
Upon suspecting an affair between Lily and her childhood friend, Atlas, Ryle tries to r*pe her and she narrowly escapes the attempt. She seeks Atlas’ help and upon reaching the hospital finds out that she is pregnant with Ryle’s baby. She decides to separate from her husband and co-parent their daughter, Emerson, who was named after Ryle’s brother whom he had accidentally killed when they were kids.
As popular as the novel is, it also has had fans divided over its ending. Many fans have expressed their disapproval that Ryle got to stay in his daughter’s life after all that he did to Lily. This is where the movie’s ending differs from the book as in the former, the creative decided to completely cut off Ryle from Lily and her child’s life.
Justin Baldoni, who portrays Ryle and also directs and executive produces the film, explained the reason behind this ending to The Wrap, saying:
I don’t want to open up a can of worms and have a conversation about, you know, should a man like Ryle be allowed to co-parent? You know, what’s an acceptable amount of work that someone has to do in that situation? It was just way too much.
He explained that the best way to end the story for the film was to Ryle watch his ex-wife and kid have the life that he could have been a part of, had he not done what he did to Lily.
The Behind-the-Scenes of It Ends with Us is Rumored to be “Tone-Deaf”
The marketing and press tour of the film is not sitting right with some fans as they have pointed out that Lively and Baldoni do not appear together on the red carpet. In fact, the Gossip Girl star was photographed with her husband Ryan Reynolds, his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman, her mother-in-law Tammy Reynolds, and co-star Brandon Sklenar (via Time).
On the other hand, Baldoni did not show up with any of his co-stars. Instead, he was photographed with his wife Emily Baldoni. This has led many to wonder if something is up between the cast. Not to mention that while Baldoni follows the rest of the cast on Instagram, they do not follow him back.
Moreover, a TikTok fan has pointed out the fact that the press interviews for a movie that deals with themes as important as domestic violence are light-hearted, and promoting products that have nothing to do with it also makes the whole creative team look rather tone-deaf. All in all, there seems to be some Don’t Worry Darling level of controversy going on for this movie.
