“It wasn’t great”: Marvel Star Cobie Smulders was Humiliated by her Mother for Not Being Able to Sing
Having begun her career as an actress in 2002 with guest appearances in the UPN sci-fi comedy series Special Unit 2, Cobie Smulders had her breakthrough in the 2005 CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which aired for nine seasons. Her performance in the show earned her a nomination for a People’s Choice Award.
Cobie Smulders starred in several other projects before she landed the role of Mariah Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). She has reprised her character in numerous MCU projects throughout her career. While her father is Dutch, her mother happens to be British. Over her career, there have been numerous times when she made her Britishness an obvious fact. The actress once brought this up in an episode of The Graham Norton Show.
Cobie Smulders’ Mother’s Nature is Glaringly British
Cobie Smulders’ mother is British, but during her appearance on the fourth episode of the 20th season of The Stephen Colbert Show (via Razvan), the actress said that there have been times when she has asked her mothers questions about being British. The L Word star told the show’s host Stephen Colbert about one such incident when her mother could not hold back her honesty.
Before recounting the incident to the guests and the audience at the show, Smulder asked Colbert: “Is it a British thing where you’re just so cruelly honest a lot of the time?” The talk-show host nodded his head rapidly. She then went on to say:
“I had that one moment with my mother and I was in the 12th grade in high school, and we put on the production of Singing in the Rain. And instead of giving me a part where I spoke, they gave me a part where I sang, which I’m not great at. And it wasn’t.. it wasn’t great. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. And my mom came to our first performance, and you know, we were all excited and I was like flushed and I felt really great and I did it. I nailed it. Even though it was a challenge for me. And I came off stage, she said: “Oh, Cobie, oh, you were so wonderful, you couldn’t sing a note of it, but you sang it anyway.”
British people have always had a reputation for being honest, oftentimes brutally so. While this is a great quality to possess, it can often lead to situations where the person ends up hurting those they care for, or love. This also means that the British people mean what they say and are usually very genuine with their intentions.

Cobie Smulders Was Unsure About Mariah Hills’ Return in the MCU

Speaking to Vanity Fair earlier this year, Smulders’ said:
“I mean, I didn’t know I was an alien in Spider-Man. There is a multiverse now, so anything is possible. But I’m pretty sure this is it. It felt and it feels strange. Maria Hill’s passing is very real, and it’s shocking, and it feels very human. It was a sad day.”
The thing with Marvel Studios is that you can never say never, especially now that the Multiverse is at play. So, only time can tell whether or not Mariah will make a comeback because her return was teased later.
