Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movies, announced earlier in 2023 that an official John Wick anime is in production. With an incredible surge in the popularity of anime over the past years, more industries outside of Japan want to be involved with anime. From comic books, TV series, live-action series, movies, and video games, many different mediums are being made into anime, and John Wick is no exception.

Stahelski’s announcement has sparked anticipation among fans and even though it hasn’t been revealed which animation studio will take up the project yet, fans are already speculating over the possibilities.

Fans Have Studio Ghibli In Mind For John Wick Anime Adaptation

During a talk with The Discourse Podcast, Chad Stahelski talked about the franchise’s upcoming TV spin-off and anime adaptation, which are two separate projects, saying that:

“So we’re really looking forward to that; we’re really excited about it because we’re doing that and a Japanese anime because I love Japanese anime so much. So to create all the cool stories that anime could achieve better than we could and the TV show to expand our world, we’ll still get our fix, you know what I mean? And we’ll still have all the fun.“

There are a lot of well-known anime studios in the industry. Some of the popular ones are Studio MAPPA, Toei Animation, and Ufotable, best known for their beautiful animation. However, it seems like another popular studio won this round. An X user posted a stunning rendition of the John Wick movie shots in Studio Ghibli style.

Many fans agreed with the X user, stating that it would be insane to see John Wick in Studio Ghibli style. Some even claimed that it would be the best animation so far if the John Wick anime gets directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is a legend in the anime world, and it wouldn’t be wrong to assume that if given the chance he would do injustice to the anime adaptation. Although it might take years, if fans are willing to be patient, Miyazaki could pull it off spectacularly.

Studio Ghibli is home to some of the greatest animators in the world and while anime is a popular genre, this animation studio is in a league of its own. Their works stand out distinctly and apart from any other films: from storytelling to animation quality, it whisks the viewers away to a whimsical utopian world, far from reality.

Something about the movies keeps the fans coming back to them. Their movies have something about them, a special and immersive quality, that makes their films so unique and enigmatic. What makes the movies even more precious is the beautifully designed visuals we see on screen are all hand-drawn. Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli, is strongly against the notion of using CGI for his films, stating that it takes away the beauty of human existence.
